  2. SELECTING A TOPIC FROM A SUBJECT AREA • 1. Identify possible subjects. a. Subjects that are important to speaker. b. Subjects that the speaker knows something about.

  3. 2. ANALYZING THE AUDIENCE AND SETTING a.Includes demographic data b.Audience analysis allows speaker to predict audience’s interest in knowledge of and attitudes toward him and his topic.

  4. c.Profiling an audience - gain data about age,education, gender, occupation, income, culture, geographical uniqueness and group affiliation.

  5. How to analyze? - questionnaire - interview - make intelligent guesses

  6. The analysis will predict:- a. how interested the audience is in your topic. b.whether audience has sufficient background of topic.

  7. c. audience’s attitude toward you as speaker i.e. Are you an expert in the topic? Are you trustworthy? Do you have an engaging personality?

  8. d. audience’s attitude toward your topic.

  9. Considering the setting provides a speaker with guidelines for both meeting audience expectations and determining the tone of the speech

  10. 1. How large will the audience be? When will the speech be given? 3. Where in the program does the speech occur? 4. What is the time limit? What are the expectations? Where? 7. What facilities are necessary?

  11. WRITING THE SPEECH GOAL • 1.Type of speech -general goal • 2.Single statement that specifies exact response speaker wants from audience -specific goal
