  1. Year 4 Curriculum Meeting 2012

  2. Aims: • To give a brief overview of the curriculum that will be taught this year. • To establish timetables for homework, spellings, reading records and PE days. • To answers any queries or questions you may have about this year.

  4. Daily Routines • 8.45 – 8.55 • 1.15 – 1.45 reading • Wednesday Afternoon – Mrs Archbold • Fruit • Uniform • PE kits – Indoor/Outdoor

Literacy • Immersed in one quality text over a period of weeks. • Creative approaches including speaking and listening, drama, art and written outcomes • The learning we will be covering during this year are: • Narrative, plays and scripts: • Stories with historical settings • Stories which raise issues/dilemmas • Stories set in imaginary worlds • Stories from other cultures • Plays • Poetry: • Creating Images • Exploring form Non-Fiction: Recounts/newspapers/magazines Information texts Explanation texts Persuasive texts

Numeracy • The units of work we will be covering during this year are: • Counting, partitioning and calculating. •  Securing number facts and understanding shape • Handling data and measures • Calculating, measuring and understanding • Shape. • Securing number facts, relationships and • Calculating.

  7. Science • Moving and Growing • Magnets and Springs • Circuits and Conductors • Solids and Liquids • Habitats • Rocks and Soils

  8. Behaviour management Marble Jar A full jar usually takes a few weeks to fill and results in one hour of golden time! Chance Card Draw Star of the Week Whole school recognition – certificates in assembly Sanctions – warning, 5, 10 or 15 minutes off break or lunchtime.

  9. Homework Suggested homework timetable: Little and Often!

  10. SPELLINGS AND TIMES TABLES Blast Off! and spelling workshops will take place each week. The multiplication squares are inside the cover of homework books. Spellings are generally based on words they have made mistakes with in their writing books. We will also continue to investigate different grammar or spelling conventions each week and they may sometimes be given these words or useful topic related words to learn. LITERACY AND NUMERACY Each week the children will be given maths or literacy work to consolidate what we have been doing in class that week. READING The children need to read daily to an adult at home and a note of this kept in the reading record book so that the progression in reading outside of school can be seen. (Reading records collected and certificates given out for reading each Friday.) Guided reading sessions will take place 5 times a week in addition to free classroom reading.

  11. School Trips and Volunteers There are trips in process of being organised for this year and a letter will be sent out with all of the relevant information when confirmed. Autumn Term… Kevin Graal story teller Felt Making Workshop Jungle Jo We are very grateful for parent volunteers for reading, cooking and to assist on trips - please can you give your names to the class representative or talk to me.

  12. Cooking Year 4 cooking takes place on a Tuesday afternoon and can start at 1:45. Parents who are free to sign up please contact class representatives. Once this is up and running we will create a rota to ensure all children get equal opportunities to experience cooking.
