  2. What is a dorm?

  3. Definition • An abbreviated form of dormitory. Derived from the french word dormir, which means to sleep. • A sleeping room, or a building containing a series of sleeping rooms; a sleeping apartment capable of containing many beds; esp., one connected with a college or boarding school.

  4. Reasons to live in a dorm • You are very close to campus recreation facilities. • You do not have to find a parking place before class. • Depending on your schedule, you can take naps between classes. • Make friends more quickly.

Reasons to live in a dorm(cont) • Wonderful and highly educational floor programs, I think that next week is an ice breaker! • Being asked the same question night after night, "Hey dude, wanna go get wasted?" • The guy next door has such an awesome stereo system that he can actually shake the posters off of my wall! • Parking is available within trekking distance of the dorms.

  6. Reasons to live in a dorm(cont) • Apartments only cost a few hundred less. Who needs all that space and privacy anyway? • I love walking uphill both ways to the food court. • The walls are so thin that you can hear your buddy and his girlfriend two rooms away.

  7. Reasons to live in a dorm(cont) • Gotta love a place where it’s quicker to take the stairs over the elevator. Up or down! • After a long day of schoolwork, I just love lying awake in bed listening to those loud, middle-of-the-night conversations that always seem to take place right outside my door. • If you get bored you can always go to the bathroom and try to guess what those nasty chunks in the sink are.

  9. What is a residence hall?

  10. Definition • Similar to a Holiday Inn hotel, but with nicer people. Residents pay $3000/year to reside in one of these. • Group living is educational in that students must interact with others who have different personal philosophies and may vary in race, nationality, religion and experiences. Learning to value and respect differences in people can be a meaningful part of your education. One of the most important parts of college life is having the opportunity to meet and appreciate a wide variety of people.

Reasons to live in a Res Hall • You will meet great new people. • You pay for so many services on campus with student fees, living here gives you more opportunities to get your monies worth. • You will feel at home much faster with a nice roommate and pleasant floor community. • You'll manage college stress more effectively. • You'll organize your time better.

Reasons to live in a res hall (cont) • You'll improve your resume. • You'll meet important individuals on campus and in the community to help develop your network connections. • More residents go to graduate school. • Easier to get involved in campus life. • Gain leadership experience in the wing, building, and on campus organizations.

Reasons to live in a res hall (cont) • Since you’re already parked on campus, it’s only a short walk to class each morning, or afternoon. • You get amazingly fast internet, and a residence hall full of friends to play internet/lan games with. • Free calling on campus, and really cheap local/long distance calling.

  14. Reasons to live in a res hall(cont) • Safety and security are emphasized on-campus. Campus Police/Security are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • Live how you want in an apartment, or residence hall room (list options pertinent to your campus).
