  1. Important Terms Related to Hosting Control Panel

  2. Table of Contents • User Datagram Protocol (UDP) • User ID (UID) • Unbound • Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and Uniform Resource Locator (URL) • URI Encoding • UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) • Virtual Private Server (VPS) • VirtualHost, User, Visitor • Web Browser, Web Disk, Web Server, Webalizer • WebHost Manager (WHM) and Webmail • Tar • Tarball • Telnet • Template Toolkit (Perl Template Toolkit) • Terabyte or Tebibyte (TB or TiB) • Theme • Thumbnail • Time to Live (TTL) • Trojan Horse (Trojan) • Trust Key Relationship • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

  3. Tar • Tar refers to a program that collates files for the purpose of transferring or distributing those files. The files that this program processes into tarballs are usually compressed by the system.

  4. Tarball YELLOW • Tarball is a file that is collated and usually compressed by the tar program.

  5. Telnet • Telnet is a network protocol. It enables a user to log remotely into a remote machine user account. Despite being similar to SSH, Telnet is less secure. Telnet should not be used to connect to one’s website except for the purpose of testing. Login information is sent as plain text by Telnet. This can be intercepted easily by others.

  6. Template Toolkit (Perl Template Toolkit) • Perl Template Toolkit is a Perl library template processing system. It is used to create templates for all of the interfaces of cPanel and WHM.

  7. Theme • Theme refers to a skeletal framework of interfaces. It is over this that the system applies one of the theme’s styles. • cPanel & WHM currently ships with a single default cPanel theme and a default WHM theme, along with Webmail and login themes. One can manage one’s themes with the Theme Manager interface in WHM. • WHM -> Home -> Themes -> Theme Manager.

  8. Thumbnail • Thumbnail is a smaller version of an image file. It lets one view multiple images with ease.

  9. Time to Live (TTL) • TTL is that value which specifies the time for which clients will cache DNS zone data. This information can be viewed in the Edit DNS Zone interface in WHM. • WHM -> Home -> DNS Functions -> Edit DNS Zone.

  10. Trojan Horse (Trojan) • Trojan is a software that claims to perform a certain function but performs malicious functions covertly.

  11. Trust Key Relationship • Trust Key Relationship is a cryptographic scheme which involves a pair of keys, one of which is public and the other is private.

  12. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) • 2FA is an improved security measure. It requires two forms of user identifications. One of these is a password and the other is a generated security code. When 2FA is enabled, a generated security code for authorization will be supplied by an application on one’s smartphone. • 2FA can be configured in the Two-Factor Authentication interface in cPanel. • cPanel -> Home -> Security -> Two-Factor Authentication. •  2FA can be managed by server administrators in the Two-Factor Authentication interface in WHM. • WHM -> Home -> Security Center -> Two-Factor Authentication.

  13. 1-800-123 -8156 Whoa! That’s a big number, aren’t you proud?

  14. User Datagram Protocol (UDP) • UDP is a connectionless transport protocol. It works in conjunction with the Internet Protocol (IP). UDP transfers data in small units which require very less reassembly. That is because data packets are not transmitted in a sequential order. Messages are primarily broadcasted over a network. UDP is used by DNS lookups.

  15. User ID (UID) • UID is the unique user number. It is assigned by the system to each user during a session.

  16. Unbound • Unbound refers to a DNS resolver. It performs caching and DNSSEC validation. It uses the libunbound library. This runs separately and it can convert hostnames to IP addresses as well as perform other tasks with the aid of DNS information.

  17. Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and Uniform Resource Locator (URL) • Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) • URI is a string of characters by which a website can be identified. • Uniform Resource Locator (URL) • URL is a string of characters by which the location of a website is identified.

  18. URI Encoding • Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) • URI is a string of characters by which a website can be identified. • Uniform Resource Locator (URL) • URL is a string of characters by which the location of a website is identified.

  19. UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) • UUID is a value that is used by the system to identify a resource. It is similar to GUID.

  20. Virtual Private Server (VPS) • VPS is a virtualized server. A single physical server is capable of hosting multiple VPSs. Each of these runs its own instances with regard to an operating system. This lets each VPS have a separate root or superuser account, as well as to operate independently.

  21. VirtualHost, User, Visitor • VirtualHost • VirtualHost is a method that aids in hosting multiple domains on a single server and often on a single IP address. • User • A User refers to someone who uses a computer in order to accomplish a purpose. • Visitor • It is an entity that views a website. • In the context of a website, the files of a website are stored as well as delivered from the servers of web hosting service providers. These companies provide the services and the technologies that make the files of a website accessible over the Internet. When the quality of service provided by these companies is exceptionally high, then they earn the reputation of being the “Best Website Hosting Company” or as the “Best Windows Hosting Company” or as the “Top Cloud Hosting Company

  22. Web Browser, Web Disk, Web Server, Webalizer Web Browser Web browser is an application that is used by visitors to view and interact with the sites and pages that are on the World Wide Web. Its examples are Firefox, Chrome etc. Web Disk Web disk is a cPanel feature that enables website owners to drag and drop files for the purpose of manipulating those. The Web Disk interface in cPanel is used for it. cPanel -> Home -> Files -> Web Disk. Web Server Web server is a program. Requests are received by it from clients (browsers). It retrieves the requested webpages as well as serves those. Webalizer Webalizer is a program that displays a website’s various statistics in tables and graphs. server.

  23. WebHost Manager (WHM) and Webmail WebHost Manager (WHM) WHM is a companion software of cPanel. It is designed for hosting providers, resellers, as well as for system administrators. Webmail Webmail refers to any application which allows website owners to access email through a browser. Its main advantage is that it provides the ability to access one’s mail account from any system that is on the internet. It doesn’t require to install or configure a specific mail program for this purpose.
