The Importance of an Occupational Hygiene Communication System in Canada John Van Delden, CIH, ROH AIHA Manitoba Section
Why Communicate? • information sharing • alternate perspectives • joint opportunities • organizational experience
Barriers to Communication • geographic • economic • workload
Barriers to Communication • Regional disparities • legislation not uniform • no groups in some areas • groups have different affiliations
Current Resources • AIHA National • membership < 5% Canadian • no ties in 2 provinces • indirect route for communication
Current Resources • CRBOH • national body • represent about 1/3 of the group • goals are different than MB
Current Resources • Regional OH groups • contacts casual at best • yearly turnover • approximately 1100 members
Options continue as is or establish some structure
Why structure? • makes roles and goals clear • allows continuity • experience shows need
What type of structure? Virtually all organizations work on a “board centered” model • Two types • Hierarchical • Affiliate
Hierarchical Board President Directors Officers Members Local section
Board Centered Models Hierarchical • control is central • works best when Board established first • may not reflect regions
Affiliate Board President Directors Officers Group Representatives Affiliate A Affiliate B
Board Centered Models Affiliate • groups autonomous • board looks at common issues • each region/group has 1 representative
Considerations • Intention for group • many possibilities • initial - simple
Considerations • Resources • limited • group needs to meet once a year - conference? • representatives not limited to executive
Considerations • Involvement • regions take lead role • board need not be exclusive of others • participants vs partners
Actions • meeting of group representatives • promotion by members • consider other groups
