  3. Enhance the capacity of individuals, teams, organisations and institutions to collectively orientate and manage rural innovation processes for the betterment of rural livelihoods while sustaining available natural resources for future generations. ICRA’s mission

ICRA ICRA is a capacity-building organisation that promotes rural innovation by strengthening the abilities of people and organisations (multiple stakeholders) to collaborate and learn from each other. It does this by: • Developing multi-actor partnerships with national or regional organisations • Building national teams that can facilitate learning between rural development partners and develop academic learning programmes • Learningfrom experience and diffusing good practices to improve rural innovation and organisational change.

ICRA’s strategy to meet the growing demand • Decentralising to the South • Responding to requests for assistance with tailor-made learning events, design of MSc programmes, supporting organisational change etc. • Strengthening capabilities of educational partner institutions to: • Provide tailor-made capacity building services to multi-stakeholder teams involved in rural innovation • Turn out students that are better equipped to manage rural innovation processes • Strengthening capacities of practitioners in rural innovation to use IAR4D approaches and realise the needed institutional change • Promote regional South-South and North-South capacity building partnerships

IAR4D capacity building – Generic steps Policy advocacy for IAR4D and doing business unusual National plan and strategy to build and use IAR4D Multi-stakeholder management and coordination mechanisms “Training of trainers” in IAR4D approach and principles Design and delivery of learning programmes Collaborative pilot learning and implementation sites Institutionalisation of IAR4D approach by innovation partners Institutionalise IAR4D approach in university programmes Regional collaboration & exchange of experience

Institutionalising IAR4D • In implementing institutions: • Additional knowledge acquisition workshops and field experience for trained teams during IAR4D implementation • Trained teams draw lessons from experience for institutional change • Assistance to managers to follow-through implications of lessons learnt for institutional change • In educational institutions: • Universities engage in rural innovation processes • Strengthen capabilities to deliver in-service capacity building services • Build IAR4D-learning into disciplinary undergraduate programmes
