Introduction Technology is something that helps people in many ways from saving lives to typing a letter. Medical technology is complicated, at the hospital it keeps people alive during open heart surgery, it keeps babies alive after they have been born, and it keeps people alive when they need immediate surgery like when they are internally bleeding. There are many things that don’t use electricity that are still technology such as eyeglasses or suspension bridges!
Eyeglasses, invented in 1280 When eyeglasses were first invented in 1280, they were thin, glass lenses that were clipped over the eyes to improve your vision. Over time, glasses went from being clipped over the eyes to glasses with frames. Glasses became more complicated with lenses including bifocals, trifocals, progressives, those for stigmatism and double vision.
Suspension Bridge, invented in 1350 Suspension bridges were long and woven with wood and mud that were able to carry no more than the weight of a man. Now, 662 years later, bridges are able to carry 100s of tons, are made of steel and cement.
Pressure cooker, invented in 1679 The pressure cooker cooks food fast with steam and pressure. It can cook meat or vegetables. The pressure cooker was invented in 1679 and is still used today! But now, in the 21st century, we use it less because we have microwaves and ovens that also cook fast with heat!
Mechanical Computer, invented in 1822 The Mechanical Computer uses gears and levers to power it. You have to turn a handle and pull the right levers. One of the important uses of the mechanical computer was to keep track of bombing sights in WWII.
Anesthesia, invented in 1842 Anesthesia is a medication that is used to sedate patients undergoing surgery. Today, in the 21st century, anesthesia is safer then when it was first invented. When it first was invented, it was very dangerous. Doctors could give you too much and you won’t wake up, or too little and you will feel the pain.
World Wide Web, created in 1990 The World Wide Web is something that you go on to find links and websites. The World Wide Web is huge! Imagine a spider web that wraps around the Earth! The World Wide Web is something that people go on for social networking, buying and selling, research, and playing games! The World Wide Web was such a big thing because it had lots of color.
Windows, created in 1995 Windows is a very powerful capability on the computer because it allows you to have many windows open at one time, this allows you to work back and fourth between applications and files.
Google, created in 1998 Google is a very powerful search engine that allows you to search something such as, “Buy a Dodge Grand Caravan” and come up with some pretty accurate results. Google also has much more! It has g-mail, translate, shopping, documents, images, maps, YouTube and more! That’s why almost everyone goes on Google!
Wi-Fi, created in 1999 Wi-Fi is a signal that is sent through the air to an electronic device; used to receive an internet connection without a cable. Before Wi-Fi was created, everyone that wanted to receive internet needed to use a cable and a power cord.
Conclusion I think that technology has changed our values because now that we have phones and computers, people think that they can get away with anything. A lot of people think that since they have a computer, they can go on Facebook (which is open to anyone) and be anonymous and make bad comments about someone. Same thing with texting, because people have phones, they think that they can get away with anything too! That’s how a lot of people get bullied. That’s how technology has changed our values! Electronic bullying, 2012, that’s where we are! I think that technology in the future will be a lot more advanced. People will create better things such as more powerful medicines that will do more things such as cure cancers of all sorts.
