  1. Some PPQs The Hard Ones!

  2. Board for GLUTs

  3. 21. GLUT-4 51 29 55 33 53 E A B GLUT-4 moves from Golgi to cell membrane after meal Glucose transporter number in response to a glucose load (that is completely cleared from the bloodstream in about 2 hours) C D The number of GLUT-4 transporters in the vesicles of the Golgi apparatus in muscle cells

  4. 22. GLUT-2 47 46 47 53 22 E A B GLUT-2 present all the time Glucose transporter number in response to a glucose load (that is completely cleared from the bloodstream in about 2 hours) C D The number of GLUT-2 transporters on the cell membrane of liver cells

  5. 23. GLUT-1 46 46 55 56 17 E A B GLUT-1 present all the time Glucose transporter number in response to a glucose load (that is completely cleared from the bloodstream in about 2 hours) C D The number of GLUT-1 transporters on the cell membrane of brain cells

  6. Board for Glycogenesis

  7. 29. Glycogen Synthesis • Which statement about the synthesis of glycogen from glucose is INCORRECT? • The formation of UDP-glucose is facilitated by the joining of two phosphates to form pyrophosphate • In UDP-glucose, the glucose residue is joined to UDP at the C-1 end of glucose. • Glycogen synthesis occurs in the cytoplasm • Activated glucose residues on UDP-glucose form glycosidic bonds with the C-4 ends of the growing glycogen chain • UTP is regenerated by the reaction of UDP and ATP 86 50 23 27 21 sneaky! pyrophosphate is involve but it is hydrolysed the C1 is the “activated” end most certainly same as B yes. forgot to mention that this year!

  8. Board for Fat Digestion

  9. 36. Fat Digestion • Which treatment would LEAST likely affect the uptake of fatty acids into the epithelial cells of the small intestine after a SINGLE fat meal? • Co-consumption of a drug which prevents emptying of the gall bladder • Co-consumption of a drug to prevent the formation of bile salts in the liver • Substituting 50% of the fat in the meal with Olestra • Co-consumption of a pancreatic lipase inhibitor with the meal • Co-consumption of a compound that prevents the formation of micelles 34 65 52 39 30 would prevent efficient digestion of fat bile salts already in the gall bladder only half the fat would be available would not be able to digest the fat would not be able to emulsify the fat – lipase wont work

  10. Coupling Analysis • Big Holes in Knowledge: • Role of final electron acceptor • The site of oxygen consumption • Function of ETC is distinct from ATP synthase, although one uses the product of the other • Need to understand this distinction to answer all “uncoupler” questions • ATP is made by F1F0ATPase (aka ATP synthase) and oxygen is used by the ETC not ATP synthase • Ambiguities: • Be careful when you use “continues”. Continues relative to what? • Be careful when you use “stops”. Does it cease completely? • Negating the stem within the answer(s). It is confusing, especially in a stressful situation.

  11. Board for Coupling worst questions in Exam last year

  12. Attempts Practical Part This wasn’t discussed in the lecture, but shows that lots of people left the last batch of questions blank

  13. Also not discussed in the lecture But it might cheer you up. My dog, Pippa, peering over the banisters, making sure that you start studying.
