Block O: Introduction Part 0. What is optical technology?
Block 0: What is Optical Technology? • Definition • Wearer-frame-lens • Fitting protocol • Application to the profession
Definition Optical Technology is the study of criteria for selecting and fitting ophthalmic lenses and frames for wearers as systems to correct ametropia, and its effect on vision.
Definition • This CD provides knowledge that is essentially of a theoretical nature. Nevertheless, this subject must also deal with certain practical processes that need to be carried out in an assembly laboratory (as set out under the heading: “Appendix: Assembly Processes”). • Only by combining these two aspects (theoretical and practical) will students be able to attain the overall skills that will allow them to enter the professional practice of Optical Technology. • An understanding of Optical Technology can only be grasped once the student has completed the subject of Ophthalmic Lenses (included on this CD).
Wearer – frame – lens • The aim of Optical Technology is to integrate three key elements: • Wearers with ametropia that needs to be corrected • A set of frames that suits their face • Ophthalmic lenses that will correct the ametropia

Background to fitting A well-planned conversation with the patient can provide us with valuable information that will help us to carry out the fitting process properly
Application to professional practice • Optical Technology prepares the Vision Care professional for the processes of dispensing, mounting and fitting of ophthalmic lenses to correct ametropias.
