OPED, LETTER TO THE EDITOR (LTE) OR A STORY • LTE’s are usually in response to an article that has recently run in the paper • OpEd are opinions on current issues • A patient that wants to speak out on the impact of sequestration on him/her and an MD is a story – contact Chase Communications
SELECT AN OPED • Select an OpEd from among the four provided by COA • OpEds are usually limited to 200-300 words • Get one or more physicians from the practice to sign the OpEd • One OpEd signed by 10 MD’s is better than 10 OpEds signed by one MD
WHERE TO SUBMIT • Submit to your metro daily paper or local community paper • Submit to the papers that serve the communities where you and your patients live • Do not submit to national papers like the New York Times or Washington Post
OBTAIN SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS • Can usually be found on the Letters to the Editor page • Call Chase with your city and state so we can research the submission guidelines, length, etc.
SAMPLE – CHICAGO TRIBUNE The preferred submission method is to e-mail letters to ctc-tribletter@tribune.com. You may mail letters to: Voice of the People, Chicago Tribune, 435 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60611. You may fax letters to: 312-222-2598. • Letters should be timely and should be addressed to the editor • Letters must be signed, must contain contact information including letter writer's city and state, and must be fewer than 400 words • No more than four signatures per letter • We edit and/or trim letters as little as possible, but we reserve the right to do so
THE SUBMISSION • Address email as instructed • Paste OpEd into the body of the email; do not send as an attachment • Add name, contact info, etc. as instructed • Email from the practice email not from a personal email

Click here for talking points for them that you can customize with the contact information of their Senators and Representatives. You can send these to patients and/or hand out in your practice. Clinics are already doing both.
Sign and Share the Stop Sequester Cut Petition Click here to download cards that you can hand out to patients and other to ask them to sign the petition at http://wh.gov/HDEm. This Word document is formatted to print on Avery cards or simply on any paper. Also, email all with the link to sign the petition.
