Altering Magnetic Properties via Aligned DomainsYongmei M. Jin, Michigan Technological University, DMR 0965081 • Random maze-like domains and aligned domains can be formed in uniaxial magnetic materials under different conditions. • Simulations of perpendicular Tb-Fe films show that, unlike maze-like domains, an aligned domain structure produces varied magnetization and strain responses depending on the direction of applied field relative to the aligned domains. This offers a domain approach to lower switching field and tailor magnetic and strain behaviors in magnetostrictive materials. • Simulations of Fe-Pt perpendicular films reveal domain wall orientation-dependent pinning effects of {111} annealing twins. Magnetic coercivity of a perpendicular film can be tuned by varying orientation of aligned domains. Altering Magnetic Properties via Aligned Domains Yongmei M. Jin, Michigan Technological University, DMR 0965081 The project supports one graduate student and offers research opportunity to one undergraduate. The research outcomes were presented by the PI and the graduate student at TMS 2011 Annual Meeting. The computer simulation results were presented to high school students and teachers through School Visits and Demonstrations and 2011 AMS Materials Camp-Teachers. The PI introduced computational materials research to prospective students and families on MTU “Preview Day”. The PI introduces to high school teachers parallel computing using Teragrid super-computers, presents her simulations of microstructure evolutions in materials processing, and explains the importance of mathematics in materials research.
