Weeks SEM Users Meeting October 22, 2010
Topics • Introductions • Operation • BSE detector broken/replaced • New sample height procedure • Filaments and heating issues • Undersaturate filament, but • Use bias >0 to tweak tip for nice filament image • Use lower current for better images (up to point) But then for BSE, use higher Gain Setting (4 vs 3) • Tip: Measurement tool • Caution: Reversed mouse mode • Innovation award: beer cap sample holder • SEM Research User Report: Noriko • Questions for Hitachi Engineer Don Gramer • Suggestions for future meetings
5/1/2007 235 hrs “Normal”: long life and then someone overheated … and it failed … explainable
Not Normal Behavior! 8/28/2010 40.1 hrs!
06/07/2010 42 hrs Getting weird thinning at tip…. And very weird thinning on legs! Wire is ~100 micron diameter before use
Use “low” filament Tweak gun bias Use not too high, not too low probe current (30? 40?) Now can use vy short stage WD For low current, bump up BSE Gain to “4”
But how to (1) remove measurement & (2) turn off green box??
Recently some users found that the “Mouse mode” movement tool took them the opposite direction…. Should move the left point to the right…but it went the opposite way….
No problem with the specimen holders…..but…. Use only vacuum-appropriate ‘sticky’ substrates to hold material while the epoxy is setting…use only correct epoxy…
