About Brazil • Population- as of 2010 it is 190million. • Population of the capital is 6,355,949 as of 2010 for Rio de Janeiro. • The capital of Brazil is Rio de Janeiro. • Brazil has a tropical type of climate. • Portuguese language, and Brazilian Portuguese are the languages spoken in Brazil. • The currency in Brazil is called Real.

  3. More to know • Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world and occupies a large portion of South America. Brazil lies between latitudes 6°N and 34°S, and longitudes 28°E and 74°W. • Brazil is the largest national economy in Latin America, the world's seventh largest economy at market exchange rates and the eighth largest in purchasing power parity (PPP), according to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Culture • The main predominant religion Roman Catholicism. • It developed distinctive styles, among them samba, MPB, choro, Sertanejo, brega, forró, frevo, maracatu, bossa nova, and axé. • Their special holidays are: April 21- Tiradentes Day and October 12- Our Lady of Aparecida. • The ethnicity background is…Whites 47.3%, Brown(multiracial) 43.1%, Black 7.6%, Asian 2.1%, and Amerindian 0.3%.

Continue…. • The typical northern food is pato no tucupitacacá, caruru, vatapá and maniçoba; the Northeast is known for moqueca (having seafood and palm oil), and acarajé (the salted muffin made with white beans, onion and fried in oil palm (dendê) which is filled with dried shrimp, red pepper), manioc, diz, hominy, dumpling and Quibebe.

Flag • The Brazilian flag was adopted on November 15, 1889. • The green symbolizes their fields and forest. • The yellow symbolizes their wealth in gold. • In the center floats a blue celestial globe with 27 white stars each one representing each state and federal districts. • The white band across the globe has the motto “Ordem E Progresso” in translation it means Order and Progress.

  9. Historical Representative • Machado de Assis, poet and novelist whose work extends for almost all literary genre, is widely regarded as the greatest Brazilian writer.

History • The city of Rio de Janeiro proper was founded by the Portuguese on March 1, 1565 and was named São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, in honor of St. Sebastian, the saint who was the namesake and patron of the then Portuguese Monarch D. Sebastião. Rio de Janeiro was the name of Guanabara Bay. • The image to the right is an old cable cart from the 1940’s.
