  1. Work program for EuCARDPhaseIICollimatoractivities(WP subtasks 8.2.2, 8.2.3, 8.2.4, partly 8.3.1)2nd EuCard Col/Mat WP Meeting22.03.2010A. Bertarelli (EN-MME) on behalf of Phase II Collimation Design team

  2. Work Program Highlights • 2010 • 1stfull prototype manufactured (Glidcop jaw) • Optimization of GlidCop/Copper brazing (CERN – TE/VSC) • Hydrodynamic simulation of shock waves in Cu with 3D models (PoliTo; GSI). • Validate jaw mechanical design, including BPMs (not jaw material) (CERN) • Manufacturing of Cu-CD large tiles (up to 400 mm) and small samples for physical and mechanical characterization (hot pressed) (AIT) • Physical/mechanical characterization before irradiation (AIT, EPFL, CERN, PoliTo, CERN) • Explore possibility to manufacture alternative materials (e.g. Mo-CD, coated SiC … ) (CERN, AIT, EPFL). • FLUKA simulation reproducing irradiation test conditions based on KI input for DPA assessment (CERN, KI). • Geometry and material R&D driven by RF theoretical and experimental results (CERN).

  3. Work Program Highlights • 2011 • 2nd Prototype manufactured for HiRadMattests • Ideally multi-material jaw (ceramics / Glidcop / Metal-Diamond?) (CERN, AIT, EPFL) • Study of HiRadMat experimental set-up (LDV, fast camera, fast X-ray, accelerometers …) (CERN, PoliTo) • FEM simulations in HiRadMat conditions for benchmarking (CERN, PoliTo) • Geometry and material finalization/optimization driven by RF theoretical and experimental results (CERN). • Validate material joining technologies (CERN, EPFL, GSI, AIT). • First irradiation tests completed. Physical/mechanical characterization after irradiation. New tests on alternative materials (e.g. Ag-CD, Mo-CD)? (KI, GSI). • FLUKA simulations with new materials available for accident and nominal cases (including multi-turn effects). (CERN) • Choice of jaw material (CERN).

  4. Work Program Highlights • 2012-13 • 3rd Prototype manufactured for HiRadMat test • Test-proof chosen material for jaw • Validate HiRadMat experimental set-up (CERN, PoliTo) • Validate FEM simulations in accident conditions for benchmarking (CERN, PoliTo) • Further irradiation tests completed. Full physical/mechanical characterization vs. DPA after irradiation (KI, GSI, CERN). • Final report on materials R&D and (All)
