In your groups... • Share your ideas about Maria and Bruno’s father. • Use the text to support your comments. For example: Point: Maria is frightened of Bruno’s father. Evidence: After Bruno insulted his father, Maria “looked around to make sure that no one was listening to them”, and told Bruno not to say such things. Explanation (Analysis): This shows that Maria worries that someone may have heard what they were saying and she is afraid of what could happen if they did.
If you can… • Exctend your answer and explain the big WHY… For example: Point: Maria is frightened of Bruno’s father. Evidence: After Bruno insulted his father, Maria “looked around to make sure that no one was listening to them”, and told Bruno not to say such things. Explanation (Analysis): This shows that Maria worries that someone may have heard what they were saying and she is afraid of what could happen if they did. Link (Extension or further analysis…say WHY, WHY WHY): They could both be punished; she could blamed for the discussion and be sent away by Bruno’s father and treated horribly, like the people on the other side of the fence at ‘Out-With’, for speaking badly about Bruno’s father. Bruno could be punished seriously also. For no one criticises Bruno’s father. He is the head of ‘Out-With’, he is a powerful man and he makes everyone do exactly what he wants. Maria is afraid that she will get into very serious trouble for allowing Bruno to speak badly of his father.
All about perspective... • But, it might suggest she is angry at Bruno for saying such disrespectful things. • But, this could mean Maria wants to leave Out-With and join the circus! • But, it might suggest that she is truly loyal to Bruno’s father. • But, it might suggest that she simply believes that children should respect their elders. Bruno was rude and should be told it is not acceptable. SENSIBLE SUGGESTIONS Tell me what you are going to do!
