  2. Rites of Passage A bar mitzvah connects to the 613 Mitzvot. Stand and Say “Cain”ORCrouch and say “Lo”

  3. Cain! Yes! A bar or bat mitzvah happens when a boy or girl is 12 or 13. At that time, he/she is seen as an adult in the eyes of his/her congregation. From that point on, he/she is responsible for doing his/her best to observe the 613 mitzvot. He/She is a son or daughter of the mitzvot!

  4. Rites of Passage A chuppah is the marriage contract that Jewish people sign before getting married. Stand and Say “Cain “ORCrouch and say “Lo”

  5. Lo! No! • A chuppah is the covering under which the bride and groom stand. It is meant to symbolize the walls of a house, always open for guests. • A ketubah is the marriage contract that both bride and groom sign.

  6. Rites of Passage Parties are held at every Jewish rite of passage. Stand and Say “Cain “ORCrouch and say “Lo”

  7. Lo! No! at a bar/bat mitzvah… Parties are held at a bris,… and at a wedding,… but not at a funeral

  9. Lo! No! A bris happens when a baby is 8 days old. A bar/bat mitzvah happens when a child is 12 or 13.

  10. Holidays The most important holidays are Sukkot, Rosh Hashanah, and Hannukah. Stand and Say “Cain”ORCrouch and say “Lo”

  11. Lo! No! The three most important Jewish holidays are Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Passover! Hannukah is NOT one of the most important holidays.

  12. Holidays Rosh Hashanah means “head of the year” and celebrates the New Year. Stand and Say “Cain”ORCrouch and say “Lo”

  13. Cain! Yes! Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. It happens in September or October. It is the beginning of the Days of Awe, the High Holy Days when Jewish people ask for forgiveness and try to get their name in the Book of Life.

  14. Holiday Rosh Hashanah is celebrated with a huge party, lots of champagne, streamers and noisemakers. Stand and Say “Cain”ORCrouch and say “Lo”

  15. Lo! No! Rosh Hashanah is a solemn holiday. Jewish people go to services at synagogue and pray. They hear the shofar, and that ‘wakes them up.’ There are some less serious aspects of Rosh Hashanah, including eating pomegranates and apples and honey.

  16. Holidays Yom Kippur is a holiday remembering the Exodus. Stand and Say “Cain”ORCrouch and say “Lo”

  17. Lo! No! Passover is the holiday that remembers the Exodus. People eat at a seder, meaning ‘order.’ They retell the story of the Exodus in order, and each item on their plate represents some part of the Exodus story.

  18. Holidays Jewish people want to be written in the book of life between the holidays Rosh Hashanah and Passover. Stand and Say “Cain”ORCrouch and say “Lo”

  19. Lo! No! Jewish people try to atone for their sins in the period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. These holidays are in September and October, and together they make up the High Holy Days or Days of Awe.

  20. Holidays Sukkot is a holiday known as the ‘hut holiday.’ A Jewish person can build a sukkah and have meals in it. Stand and Say “Cain”ORCrouch and say “Lo”

  21. Cain! Yes! Sukkot is a holiday to remember the time that the Israelites were in the desert, after Moses received the 10 Commandments and before they arrived in Canaan. Jewish people remember it by building a sukkah in their yard.

  22. Objects/Symbols A Kippah has 613 fringes called tzitzit. Stand and Say “Cain”ORCrouch and say “Lo”

  23. Lo! No! A kippah is a head covering, worn to remind Jewish people that they are underneath, or dependent upon, God. A tallit is a prayer shawl that has 613 tzitzit on it.
