Introduction Multimedia selected from Proc. 11th European Workshop on Multimedia in Physics Teaching and Learning (MPTL XI) Szeged, Hungary, September 2006 Criteria for selecting these multimedia examples from the list: • Topic that cannot be illustrated by conventional means – obviously 3D such as magnetic effects. • Ignored those that are intrinsically 2D phenomena – electrostatics, circuits and circuit components etc. • Ignored commercial adjuncts for textbooks. • Charge moving in a magnetic field and/or electric field (186/217/126) • Magnetic field inside a solenoid (138) EUPEN General Forum, Poiana Brasov, September 2008

Observations • The best multi-media may come from the least expected sources • Dedicated departmental server required in some cases as multimedia may be part of a large suite of applications • Many titles available on-line – BUT – few appear to be available for immediate download • internet access required in the lecture theatre • Applets cannot easily be imbedded into PowerPoint, use ‘LiveWeb’ • http://skp.mvps.org/liveweb.htm • Need to distinguish between • sophisticated applets of interest to the lecturer (1863D Lorentz force) for use as a teaching aid during lectures, • and simple illustrations that add little to a diagram but are suitable for private study by students (2172D Lorentz force or 138 solenoid) EUPEN General Forum, Poiana Brasov, September 2008
