Oedipus the King. Father of Antigone, Polyneices, Ismene, Etoecles Son of Laius and Jocasta. The Curse. Laius was cursed- his son would kill him and marry his mother His son was Oedipus. Laius had Oedipus’s ankles pierced with nails and left him in the woods.

The Curse • Laius was cursed- his son would kill him and marry his mother • His son was Oedipus
Laius had Oedipus’s ankles pierced with nails and left him in the woods. • His servant instead gave the baby to shepherd who gave the boy to King Polybus and Queen Merope
Curse becomes True • Oedipus gets in a fight and kills a stranger • Stranger is his father (Laius)
As Oedipus traveled, he saved Thebes from being terrorized and became King. • He married the Queen, Jocasta- his mother
Consequences • Jocasta realizes the truth and commits suicide. • Oedipus blinds himself by pushing Jocasta’s brooch pins into his eyes and abdicates the throne.
His sons, Eteocles and Polyneices, inherit kingdom to be alternated each year. • Eteocles refuses to step down for Polyneices, and Polyneices attacks Thebes.
Both brothers are killed in battle. • King Creon (Jocasta’s brother) inherits the thrown and declares Polyneices NOT to be buried.
