Oedipus went to Queen Jocasta for advice Ignore the prophecies. I was once told that my Laius would die at the hands of our son. It didn’t come true because our son died abandoned and Laius died by robbers.
Oedipus becomes distressed by Jocasta's remarks because just before he came to Thebes he killed a man who resembled Laius at a crossroads. To learn the truth, Oedipus sends for the only living witness to the murder, a shepherd. Another worry haunts Oedipus. As a young man, he learned from an oracle that he was fated to kill his father and marry his mother. Fear of the prophecy drove him from his home in Corinth and brought him ultimately to Thebes
Polybus, King of Corinth, has died of old age. Jocasta rejoices, thinking that this is proof that the prophecy Oedipus heard is worthless. Oedipus still worries about fulfilling the prophecy about marrying his mother.
Hearing what he thinks is good news from the messenger, he finds out Polybus and Merope are not his real parents. But that the messenger himself gave Oedipus to the royal couple when a shepherd offered him an abandoned baby from the house of Laius.
I am going to track down this shepherd, and learn the truth. Please don’t go Oedipus!!
You are actually the son of Laius and Jocasta! Tell what you know or I will kill you! Oedipus is agonized by his fate learning that he has killed his father and married his mother.
