Taking a soil sample • Prior to planting (symptoms=too late) • Use spade, knife, auger* • Randomly sample • 10-30 field • No more than 20 acres • Use common sense • No galvanized buckets • No fence rows, etc.
Essential Nutrients • 16 essential nutrients • C,H,O supplied by air and soil • Macro Nutrients (6) • N,P,K,Ca,Mg,S • Micro Nutrients • B,Fe,Cu,Zn,Mn,Mo,Cl
The most important nutrient is the one that is most limiting To a point…..
Recommendations Sweet Corn Zinc Deficiency
Lime Requirements • Test called for 0.5 t/a lime • Based on RNV or relative neutralizing value • Previously KY recommendations based on 67% RNV • Now based on 100% RNV • So to calculate: How much = Recommended Rate/(% RNV x 100) 0.75 t/a = 0.5 t / (66 x 100) Fall 2007 - Agricultural Limestone Test Results Lloyd Murdock, Greg Schwab, and Frank Sikora Samples collected and analyzed by KDA University of Kentucky - Cooperative Extension Service Division of Regulation and Inspection QUARRY OR COMPANY COUNTY %CaCO3 #10 Sieve #50Sieve RNV% Columbia, KY ID# = 1 95 95 43 66 Scottsville, KY ID# = 2 76 94 34 49
Peppers • Peppers grown on plastic and fertigated • How to get N with fertigation?
Fertigation and Soil Tests • How to calculate? • Apply 50 lb N preplant then fertigate. • 75 lbs/ac to fertigate • Weekly application • 6 lb 4 oz per week for 12 weeks
How Much to Fertigate? • T = time required for water to reach the farthest point in the field (“charge” the system) • Fertigation time = 2 x T + 15-20 minutes. • Assuming double row with 6’ centers and 12” plant spacing • 14,500 plants acre • Calculate dose for area covered (ex. 1000 plants)
Tomato Fertigation • Put out 50 lb N preplant • P, K, and Mg preplant • If lime and Mg needed then put out dolomitic lime • Hartz Ratio • If at risk use potassium nitrate
Fertigation with Potassium for Tomatoes Assuming 4,200 plants acre (6’ rows, 18” between plants) Assuming weekly fertigation for 10 weeks 75 lbs/10 weeks=7.5 lb week then……. (7.5 lb/4200) x 1000 (or how many plants you have) = lbs/wk
