Chlamydia • Chlamydia is the most commonly reported STD in the United States. • It is a bacteria. • Sexually active females 25 years old and younger need testing every year. • Easy to cure, Chlamydia can impact a woman’s ability to have children if left untreated. • 2.8 million infections each year in the US
Gonorrhea • Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium. • Gonorrhea can be cured with the right treatment • CDC estimates that, annually, more than 700,000 people in the United States get new gonorrhea infections • Untreated gonorrhea can increase a person’s risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV—the virus that causes AIDS.
Herpes • Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). • Genital herpes infection is common in the United States. Nationwide, 16.2%, or about one out of six, people aged 14 to 49 years have genital HSV-2 infection. • There is no treatment that can cure herpes. Antiviral medications can, however, prevent or shorten outbreaks during the period of time the person takes the medication.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) refers to infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes and other reproductive organs • It is estimated that more than 750,000 women experience an episode of acute PID. Up to 10-15% of these women may become infertile as a result of PID. • PID can be cured with several types of antibiotics. A health care provider will determine and prescribe the best therapy. However, antibiotic treatment does not reverse any damage that has already occurred to the reproductive organs. If a woman has pelvic pain and other symptoms of PID, it is critical that she seek care immediately.
Syphilis • Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterium. • Syphilis can cause long-term complications and/or death if not adequately treated. • During 2010, there were 45,834 new cases of syphilis • No home remedies or over-the-counter drugs will cure syphilis, but syphilis is simple to cure with appropriate antibiotics from a physician. Treatment will kill the syphilis bacterium and prevent further damage, but it will not repair damage already done.
Trichomiasis • Trichomoniasis (or “trich”) is a very common sexually transmitted diseasethatis caused by infection with a protozoan parasite. • In the United States, an estimated 3.7 million people have the infection, but only about 30% develop any symptoms of trichomoniasis. • Trichomoniasis can be cured with a single dose of prescription antibiotic medication (either metronidazole or tinidazole), pills which can be taken by mouth.
HIV • HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus. It is the virus that can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS.) • In 2007, there were 35,962 cases of AIDS • AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection, when a person’s immune system is severely damaged and has difficulty fighting diseases and certain cancers. • Before the development of certain medications, people with HIV could progress to AIDS in just a few years.
