Homo Habilis: Handy man • 1 to 2 million years ago • Had the ability to make very simple tools which required imagining, planning and creating. • Most likely lived in groups • More advanced than Lucy
Homo Erectus: Upright Man • From 1,800,000 to 200,000 years ago • First hominids to migrate out of Africa • Taller and thinner than earlier hominids • Strong bones, larger brains • Good walkers and runners • Created more complex tools & shelter • Created fire (used to cook animal meat & to keep warm) • Lived longer than other Hominids
Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis • From 230,000 to 30,000 years ago • “Wise Man” • Shorter, Stockier and Stronger than modern humans • Large Brains • Skilled tool makers • Lived, traveled and hunted in a group • Strong sense of community (cared for each other)
Homo Sapiens Sapiens • From 35,000 to 12,000 BCE • Early modern humans • High rounded skulls, large brains, small teeth & slender bones • Created clothing & better tools such as the spear thrower and the bow. • Left a record of themselves through their artwork (cave paintings). • Had feelings, dreams and were able to communicate using pictures and symbols.
