Job Performance Requirement 16-11 Removing the Windshield and Roof
A Make certain that the vehicle is stabilized. The windshield should be “chopped” along the bottom edge with a pick-head axe. Placing a hand on the pick of the axe will help control it, making certain that only one corner of the blade penetrates the glass.
B The front roof posts on both the passenger side and driver side should be cut through next, using cutters or hand tools such as a reciprocating saw or hacksaw. JPR 16-11B
C Relief cuts are placed in the roof on both sides of the vehicle, allowing ample space to gain access when the roof is folded. JPR 16-11C
D A tool such as a pike pole is placed across the rear section of roof. Apply downward pressure to form a fulcrum for the windshield and roof portion being folded over. JPR 16-11D
E The windshield and attached assembly will be folded over the rear section. JPR 16-11E
F Once folded over, easy access is attained and patient stabilization can begin as removal is carried out. The folded-over portion should also be secured so that a wind gust cannot blow it back over onto the patient or firefighters. JPR 16-11F
