  3. B Once the lead saw (firefighter on the right) has established the ID cut and the primary head cut, he will begin the parallel cuts four inches inside the purlin. The secondary saw (firefighter on the left) operates in unison to establish the head cut, followed by the parallel cuts. JPR 18-2B

  4. C Here both saws work in unison back toward their means of egress, extending the parallel cuts and rolling the first rafter with which they come in contact. JPR 18-2C

  5. D Another view of the ventilation team making the parallel cuts approximately four inches inside the purlin, working back toward their means of egress. JPR 18-2D

  6. E Once the ventilation team has made contact with the second rafter or support member, they stop cutting any further and establish the bottom cut. In this photo, the ventilation team has come in contact with the second support member and are stopping the parallel cuts. JPR 18-2E

  7. F This photo shows the fourth and final cuts in the sequence. The bottom cut is made approximately four inches on the top side of the second support member. JPR 18-2F

  8. G This photo shows a successful louver-in-lieu operation, in which a tactically offensive heat hole was established in a commercial occupancy heavily involved with fire. The louver in lieu is approximately 32 x 8 feet and quickly increased the visibility and tenability for interior companies. JPR 18-2G
