2. About Me • I graduated from Emporia State University in December 1999 with a degree in Communication and an emphasis in History. • My husband Josh is a teacher in the Piper School District. • I worked in the corporate world for several years before pursuing my education degree. • I received my Elementary licensure in 2008 and my ELL certification in 2011. • This is my fourth year teaching third grade at Crestview.

3. My Goals • To help your child grow in all subject areas taught in 3rd grade including reading, writing, math, science and social studies. • To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. • Help your child make new friends and discover new interests. • Help build your child’s self-esteem about themselves and their education.

4. 3rd Grade Information 8:10 – 3:10 • Students arrive at 8:00 a.m. • Class begins at 8:10 a.m. • School dismissal is at 3:10 p.m. • Last names A-O will be picked up in the north parking lot. • Last names P-Z will be picked up in the circle drive. • Kindergarten students will be picked up in the circle drive regardless of last name.

5. Specials Schedule • Specials will take place every day from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. except for Friday. • Specials Schedule • Monday – Music/PE Thursday – Library • Tuesday – Art Friday – No Specials • Wednesday - Music/PE

6. Class Subjects • The subjects we will study in third grade are: • Reading • Writing • Math • Science • Social Studies • Music, Art, P.E., Computers and Library

7. Homework • Homework will be issued as a packet on Friday and collected the following Friday. • The homework packets will consist of three parts: • 1) homework assignments comprised of reading, math and spelling practice • 2) Reading passage with questions • 3) A book report

8. Homework Policy • Students who fail to complete and return the homework packet will receive a missing homework mark and complete the packet at the quiet table on the Friday the homework was due. • Students who are responsible and return the completed homework packet each Friday will receive lunch in the classroom with the teacher.

9. Classroom Expectations Students are expected to follow the expectations of ROAR. R = I am Respectful to myself and others. O = I am On task and ready to learn. A = I Act safely towards myself and others. R = I am Responsible for my actions and will leave things better than I found them.

10. Classroom Expectations continued • Students in each third grade class will receive a Smile Sheet. Students receive a “Smile” for showing proper behavior throughout the day. • Students receive ROAR tickets for following the expectations of ROAR. A drawing is done daily and students receive incentives both in and outside the classroom if their name is drawn from the ROAR canister. • A marble Jar is used as a whole-class reinforcement for proper behavior. Students earn marbles when they receive compliments from myself and/or other staff members. Once the marble jar is full students will receive a class reward.

11. Classroom Expectations continued • Students are given three unifix cubes which are utilized for individual misbehaviors both in and outside the classroom. If a student removes a unifix cube, they will fill out an off-track sheet. If a student removes two unifix cubes in the same school day, that student will fill out another off-track sheet and go to the safe seat. If a third unifix cube is removed in the same school day, that student is sent to the buddy room. • Each day all students start their day with three unifix cubes. • All off-track sheets that are filled out by students each week will be sent to the parent at the end of each week attached to the weekly report.

Changes in regular schedule/early dismissal Please send a note identifying the changes so that I am aware of the situation. This helps me ensure your child’s safety. Forgotten Items Please drop these items off in the office.

13. Drinks • Water is the onlydrink allowed in the classroom, and it must come in a water bottle type container. • Students who fail to follow this drink rule will lose this privilege.

14. Conferences We will have two scheduled conferences during the fall and spring; however, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at school 993-3026, email at cvbaxter@smsd.org , or send a note anytime.

15. Report Cards • Report Cards are sent home a week after each quarter ends in an unsealed envelope. • The report card is yours to keep. • Sign the envelope and return it back to school empty and unsealed.

16. Grading Scale • First and second quarter, children will receive S+, S, S-, etc. • Third and fourth quarter, children will receive letter grades. • S+ / A+ = 98 – 100% N / D = 60 – 69% • S / A or B = 80 – 97% U / F = 59% - below • S- / C = 70 – 70%

17. Field Trips • Field trips are planned to enhance the curriculum and give the children an opportunity to see things we have been discussing at school. • Permission forms must be signed and returned prior to the field trip. • Hand written notes or verbal permission are not acceptable. • Third graders take 2-3 field trips during • The school year.

18. Accelerated Reader • AR is a school-wide reading incentive program at Crestview. • Students will record AR points quarterly. • Students need to read a book then take a comprehension quiz on the computer. • Students earn points on the point value of the book and the number of questions answered correctly on the quiz.

19. Book Orders • Checks must be made out to the book company (usually Scholastic) or you may also send cash. • If you are ordering books as a gift for your child, let me know and we’ll arrange how to get the books to you “secretly”. • You can also order directly on my web back pack at the following link: http://www4.smsd.org/kindelbaxter/html25515.htm • The username and password is listed on my page so that you can order a book without having to go through me. • Optional Participation.

20. Birthdays • Treats may be sent, but it should be something that your child can pass out easily to their classmates. Please have them cut individually and ready to serve with napkins or plates as necessary. • Please do not send drinks for individual parties. • Home party invitations MAY NOT be handed out at school. This is to prevent the children from getting their feelings hurt if they are not invited.

21. Money • When sending money to school for any reason, please put it in an envelope with the following information on it: • - Teacher’s name • - Student’s name • - Amount • - What the money is for (lunch, PTA, book order, etc.) • This will lessen the confusion and hopefully there won’t be any money that gets lost.

22. Lunch • If your child brings a lunch from home and wishes to purchase milk, he/she may have it deducted from their lunch account. • You are welcome to come eat lunch with your child! • Fast food and pop are not allowed in the school cafeteria. (This is a school policy). • If you are having lunch with your child, please wait for your child at the office.

23. Medications • The school cannot give any kind of medication to your child without a signed medical release in the office. • This includes ALL over-the-counter (cough drops, etc.) and prescription medications.

24. P.E. / Recess • We have P.E. on Monday and Wednesday, so your child needs to wear tennis shoes on those days. • When cooler weather approaches, please help your child choose appropriate clothing for cold weather (gloves, hats, coats, etc.) • It is a good idea for girls to wear shorts underneath their dresses for P.E. and Recess. • Please do not have your child come to school with flip flops so we can help prevent any injuries from occurring.

25. Monkey “Star” of the Week MONDAY: Sharing Sack and Paperwork - A bag and paperwork will be sent home with the star student. They will be asked to fill the bag with approximately five items, fill out the paperwork and bring it back to share with classmates. TUESDAY: Lunch Buddy— Come to Crestview and enjoy lunch with you child today! WEDNESDAY: Star of the Week Presentation THURSDAY: Friendly Letter Book - Students will be writing friendly letters to the star of the week.  FRIDAY: Estimation Jar – Student will be asked to share their estimation jar with the class. This will be used as a math activity.

26. Estimation Jar • When your child is selected for Star of the Week, they will be sent home with the estimation jar. • The student will take the jar home and fill it with another item of choice. Please do not fill the jar with more than 100 of an item. • Each Friday as a class we will make estimations that are used to find the maximum, minimum, median, mode, and range. • Examples of items to put in jar: • - Wrapped Candy - Erasers • Rubber bands - Stickers

27. Family Participation • Please plan to get involved in our classroom this year! • Studies show that students are much more successful when their families are involved with their teacher to create a team atmosphere! • Sign up to help out in a way that suits your family before leaving today!
