Objective 2 GOAL:Provide an understanding of why and how we will minimize out-of compliance students within City Schools through an Immunization Door Knocking Campaign.
Background Information New Requirements for SY2014-15 • Kindergarten students are now required to have two (2) doses of the Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine instead of one (1). • Seventh graders are now required to have a Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria, and Pertussis) booster and a separate Meningococcal (Meningitis) vaccine. Since March 2014, central office staff has worked to provide guidance and information to schools and families, analyze data trends, and collaborate with key stakeholders (ITD, Network Staff, and Baltimore City Health Department-BCHD) to decrease the number of non-compliant students. As of 9/19/14 • 358 kindergarteners are out of compliance, which results in a 95.1% immunization compliance rate • 994 seventh graders are out of compliance, which results in a 82.6% immunization compliance rate.
Background Information continued 4 • The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released a press release on September 12, 2014 regarding an immunization extension for local education agencies (LEA). • Baltimore City Schools has requested and qualifies for this one-time extension. • The extension is restricted to Kindergarten and 7th grade students lacking documentation of the new required vaccines but does not apply to non-Kindergarten or 7th grade students. The funding implication for Kindergarten and 7th grade students is not yet clear from MSDE.
Resources for Implementation Each volunteer will be provided with a information packet (These can be found online at: baltimorecityschools.org/homevisits) Inside each information packet, you will find: • Immunization Home Visit Script (Including FAQs) • Student Information Form • Immunization Flyer Each volunteer will be access a list of out-of-compliance students, including which vaccinations are required and basic demographicsfrom their school or SSL.
Request The following actions will be taken: • Home visits will be conducted on Tuesday 9/23 and Wednesday 9/24 by the following district staff: • Social Workers through the Office of Related Services • School Counselors through the Office of Secondary Services • Network Team members (SSLs and high school network FCEs) from School Support Networks • Teachers from Home and Hospital Services • Staff will conduct home visits in 2-man teams.
The Visit: Protocol & Timeline 7 It is recommended that each team consist of two staff members. No team will be assigned more than ten homes to visit. • Pre-Arrival • Complete initial parts of student information form based on SMS data and out-of-compliance lists generated by your school or SSL. • Review Safety Review brochure • Arrival • Set the tone (warm introduction, thank family for time and participation, etc.) • Establish rapport/develop caring relationship • During the Visit • Use the script provided and complete form • Leave information • After the Visit • Provide the form to your school based immunization coordinator and/or school secretary to update any information. • Email the Student Information Forms in one file to John Zesiger at jkzesiger@bcps.k12.md.us
