10 Steps: Review Answers • Recognizing the main idea, or the point, is the most important key to good comprehension. • The main idea of the comic is: the marriage has problems • The general statement that expresses the main idea of the passage is choice B • Why isn’t A the correct answer? The paragraph doesn’t show how bullying has been a problem over time • Think of the main idea as the “umbrella” idea. All the other material of the paragraph fits under it. The other material is made up of supporting details. • Here are three strategies that will help you find the main idea: • Look for general vs. specific ideas • Use the topic to lead you to the main idea • Use key words to lead you to the main idea • Which item in Practice 1 example is the general idea?
