  1. Dynamics Intro to Dynamics & Newton’s 1st Law

  2. Dynamics: • The study of the relationship between the motion of an object & the forces acting on it. • Cause of motion • (Description of motion = kinematics)

  3. Inertia: • Is a property that causes a body to resist changes in its state of motion • ex. what happens to a standing bus passenger when the bus turns? • Amount of inertia related to mass • i.e. greater mass = greater inertia

  4. Newton’s 1st Law: • “If no net force acts on an object, it maintains its state of rest or its constant speed in a straight line.” • Ex. ball at rest will stay at rest • Ex. if friction didn’t exist a puck would keep sliding on ice.

  5. Implications: • An external force is required to change the velocity of an object • The external force must be unbalanced (not in equi) • Objects at rest remain at rest unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force • Moving objects continue to move in a straight line at a constant speed unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force

  6. Ex. Wear your seatbelt !!! • Car & passenger traveling at constant velocity • Car brakes suddenly • Brakes stop car, but not passenger • Passenger’s inertia causes person to keep at constant velocity • If no seatbelt…through the windshield!

  7. “Unbalanced” Force? • Recall, many forces act on an object • For an object to move, it must be acted on by a Fnet & can’t be in equi where Fnet = 0 • Ex. Ffriction = 1N Fapplied = 4N Fnet = 3N
