Characteristics of plants • 1: make their own food • 2: cells have cell walls outside their cell membranes • 3: reproduce with a two part life cycle
Two part life cycle • 1st phase: spore producing phase is the sporophyte • 2nd phase: the sex-cell (also called gametes) producing phase of a plant is called gametophyte
Two main groups • Vascular and Nonvascular • Nonvascular: plants that do not have vessels to transport materials throughout the plant • Materials are moved around through diffusion and osmosis • Most nonvascular plants are small
Vascular • Vascular: plants that have vessels to transport materials throughout the plant. • Like water pipes in your house • Some are very small, some are very large
Read “Focus on George Washington Carver” • You are George Washington Carver, and you are veryyyyyy old • You decide to write a short biography about your life and accomplishments. • Write this biography from his perspective, with a minimum length of 4 paragraphs. • Be creative!
Vascular • Two groups: • Those that produce with seeds and those that do not. • Those that don’t use seeds produce through spores • Spores are small reproductive cells that can develop into adults without fusing with an adult
Vascular Plants • Plants that reproduce with seeds are divided into 2 groups: • 1. Gymnosperms: produce seeds but no flowers • Include cycads, ginkgoes, gnetophytes, conifers • 2. Angiosperms: produce seeds in flowers • Seeds are enclosed in protective cases called fruit • All agricultural crops, flowers, shrubs, trees, weeds
Life spans • Vascular plants with seeds are categorized based on their life span. • Annuals: complete their life cycle in one growing season. Annus= year: flowers, herbs, vegetables • Biennials: complete their life cycle in two growing seasons: carrots, celery, etc. • Perennials: live through many growing seasons. Per=through: most trees
Needs of Plants • Soil • Water • Sun’s energy • Clean air • Space
Make a Visual Glossary • Read section 5 • Define, create an illustration, and give an example (if provided) for each bold term in the section.
LIFE PROCESSES OF PLANTS • MAKE A FLIP BOOK • 1: TITLE PAGE • 2: PHOTOSYNTHESIS • 3: CELLULAR RESPIRATION • 4: TRANSPIRATION • 5: TRANSPORT • EACH PAGE SHOULD DEFINE THE PROCESS, GIVE EXAMPLES, AND USE ILLUSTRATION
