Monday, February 4, 2013 Anchorage Public School Reading/Language/Writing Students are finishing their graphic organizer on their personal narrative. They will edit their graphic organizer using editing marks and then in class we will write the first draft. For reading this week, students will begin “Wind as Power” in their new National Geographic” reading series. Math We will start the week off by taking the Math Quiz that was scheduled for Friday. The rest of the week we will devote to improper fractions and mixed numbers. We will be converting them, decomposing them, adding them, subtracting them, and finding equivalent fractions for them. Should be a fun week! Science Students will present and film their meteorologists report today since Friday was a snow day. Students will watch their weather report on Tuesday and reflect on the “Improvement” stage of their STEM challenge. Students will spend the latter of the week reading about “Objects in Sky.” Take home tests on weather have been graded and will go home today in student’s weekly folders. Students have a new Study Island Assignment for Earth Science added to their account. Completion of all five lessons by the due date will count for extra credit. Social Studies This week in Social Studies, we will continue our symbolism study. Students will learn that symbols can be people, places, or objects that stand for something else. Students will examine American symbols such as the Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty and bald eagle. We will discuss what America represents as a country; bravery, resilience, and freedom and design possible symbols to show those qualities. We will move on to Kentucky's symbols and our motto. We are asking that only one survey be completed by each family and returned to the school. Thank you for your help with this. Parent / teacher conferences have been scheduled. Our holiday party for Valentine’s Day will be on Thursday, February 14th from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Students will bring home information this week regarding our party.
