A Symposium on a new development of Proton RadiotherapyNijmegen, September 17th, 2010 • We want to contribute to optimal treatments for patients close to their livings • “Stand-alone Proton Units” : a modern technique, innovative and cost effective Jos J. Immerzeel, Radiation Oncologist, RISO
Introduction This presentation: • Developments in the Netherlands • CPAC and the initiative in Deventer • Promises and Perils of the new development • Aim of this conference Jos J. Immerzeel
Developments in the Netherlands • 2008: three initiatives in NL: • Groningen, UMCG: protoncenter nearby nuclear-physics-accelerator-research center • Maastricht: Euregional cooperation (with GER/BE) • Amsterdam (NKI)- Rotterdam (Erasmus Univ.)- Leiden (Univ.)- Delft (Techn. Univ): Holland PTC • 2009: National Health Counsil: positive (conditional) standpoint • 2009: CvZ (College for Health Insurances): report on development of protontherapy; indications • 2010: Gouvernmental Decision expected Q4 Jos J. Immerzeel
Developments in the Netherlands • “Standard” indications in NL: 250 • Potential indications: 7000 • # units needed: 10-15 • “Classic” Protoncenter: 3-4 units • Is another initiative for proton therapy in East NL necessary? Jos J. Immerzeel
CPAC and the initiative in Deventer • 2006: new RISO building, also 2 Tomotherapy (IMRT) units; up to now unique in the NL… • 2007: Tomotherapy: DWA development --> CPAC • CPAC searches >15 investors/shareholders: RISO? • Three investment tranches, three milestones • March 2008: Board of RISO informed: positive about the opportunity • Juli 2008: Board decision: participate, but no public (RISO) risk-investments possible. Need to search for private investors. Jos J. Immerzeel
CPAC and the initiative in Deventer (2) • First tranche: own investment with funding party. Risk investment (private) • Establishment of DEVPRON BV • Second and third tranche: • after end of risk period • private investment + loan RISO (public ) • Milestone 2009: acceleration of protons in a subscale DWA Jos J. Immerzeel
CPAC and the initiative in Deventer (3) Standpoints of Board of RISO: • Participation in DEVPRON BV by the director should be less than 5% • Investments by RISO in DWA is only possible when risk towards a succesful development is deminished. • After this: the loan of RISO to Devpron BV can be considered as downpayment/investment • Once decided to buy a unit, Devpron BV would be taken over by RISO. Jos J. Immerzeel
CPAC and the initiative in Deventer (4) • 2010: promising developments of DWA • Investors : first rights to achieve treatment units • Participation in CPAC Scientific Advisory Board • Installation of Stearing group (Stakeholders) • Prof. Jurgen Debus (Heidelberg Ion-beam Therapy centre): Advisor for RISO • RISO: search for partners (University!) Jos J. Immerzeel
CPAC and the initiative in Deventer (5) • July 2010: Partnership with University of Nijmegen/ St. Radboud • Regional cooperation: Technical University Twente and radiotherapy centers • National: Investigation for cooperation with other initiatives Jos J. Immerzeel
Promises and Perils of the new development • Installation in existing radiation oncology centers (single vault units) • Lower costs regarding infrastructure • Lower costs for personell • No admixture with neutrons BUT: • Dose distribution of Protons: to good! • Imaging and dosimetry: extremely important • DWA is still a concept….. Jos J. Immerzeel
Aim of this conference • To inform the audience about the DWA compact Proton Accelerator and the initiative of Deventer /Nijmegen: more than a concept? • To convince stakeholders, decision-makers and collegues that this new development really is a chance • To initiate cooperation with the other initiatives (UMCG, Holland PTC, Maastricht) Jos J. Immerzeel
Cooperation in the Netherlands: Jos J. Immerzeel
