  1. Let’s Take a Safety Moment The DOECAP Operations Team spent time this year to review the various aspects of auditing Laboratory and TSD Facilities, and performed an Activity Hazard Assessment relative to each.

  2. Two Primary Areas • Travel to and from the Audited Facility • Auditing Activities at the Facility

  3. Travel Safety Weather Conditions • Local and at Destination • Clothing for Your Destination • Safety Gear for Trips by Automobile • Drive According to Weather Conditions • Check Flight Times or Cancellations • Avoid Travel in Dangerous Conditions

  4. Travel Safety Lifting and Carrying • Use Proper Lifting Techniques • Avoid Straining and Twisting Airports and Airplanes • Transport Devices (trains, buses, escalators, moving walkways, stairs, etc.) • Boarding and Deplaning (especially from the ground) • Wear Seatbelt at all Times • Follow all In-Flight Safety Instructions

  5. Travel Safety Driving • Inspect Daily Prior to Use • All Occupants Must Wear a Seatbelt • Familiarize Yourself with Rental Vehicles • Do Not Use Cell Phones While Driving • Obey Standard Traffic Rules • Unattended Vehicles • Turn off engines • Engage Emergency Brake • Lock Doors

  6. Travel Safety Hotels • Reputable Hotel in Safe Location • Park in Well Lit Areas • Use Well Lit Walkways and Stairways • Know Emergency Exits • Use Care Lifting and Moving Luggage • Be Aware of Your Surroundings (people, curbs, doors, stairs, etc.) • Secure Room Locks

Auditing Safety While at the Facility • Pay Attention to Facility Safety Instructions • Facility Alarms and Announcements • Emergency Exits and Assembly Points • Follow All Area Postings (safety glasses, safety shoes, lab coats, hearing protection, radiation control boundaries, etc.) • Avoid Unsafe Actions and Conditions • Report Unsafe Actions and Conditions • Follow Facility Directions and Guidance

Auditing Safety Walking Areas at the Facility • Be Aware of Surface Changes (carpet/tile, dry/wet, curbs, uneven surfaces, etc.) • Secure Electrical Cords in Work Areas • Walk Don’t Run • Don’t Walk and Read • Use Handrails • Use Stepladders Not Chairs • Watch for Forklifts, Heavy Equipment, etc. • Caution on Elevated Gantries and Walkways • Watch for Falling Objects

Auditing Safety Chemical and Radiation Areas • Observe Area Signs and Postings • Wear Proper and Required PPE • Use Care Where Chemicals are in Use • Do Not Pickup Chemical Containers • Wear Appropriate Dosimetry • Do Not Handle Contaminated Equipment • Follow Radiation Work Permit Postings • Follow Entry and Exit Requirements

Auditing Safety Hot or Noisy Environments • Do Not Touch Hot Objects or Equipment • Signs and Symptoms of Heat Stress • Prevent Heat Stress (through self pacing, work breaks, replenishing fluids, limiting time in the sun, staying in the shade when possible • Wear Appropriate Hearing Protection • Avoid Long Periods in High Noise Areas • Follow Facility Postings and Requirements

TSDF Special Attention Machinery and Equipment • Do Not Touch or Use Facility Equipment • Do Not Get Too Close to Machinery, especially when in-use • Be Aware of Your Surroundings • Make Facility Personnel Aware of Your Presence • Walk in Designated Areas Only • Watch for Trucks, Forklifts, and Other Heavy Equipment • Avoid Crane and Cargo Movements • Be Aware for the Possibility of Falling Objects

  12. Lab Special Attention Analytical Instrumentation and Work Areas • Do Not Touch or Use Analytical Instrumentation • Do Not Get Too Close to Instruments, especially when in-use • Be Aware of Your Surroundings • Make Laboratory Personnel Aware of Your Presence • Walk in Designated Areas Only • Watch for Glassware, Bottles, Beakers, etc. • Avoid Contact with Chemicals and Chemical Containers • Avoid Disrupting In-Process Analyses

  13. Auditing Safety Be Alert Be Observant Do Your Job While Not Getting In The Way
