Face time is precious Use technology to deliver content to be able to discuss content in depth Use technology to generate lively discussions Low stakes, high learning impact activities Key Principles
ADVANTAGES • Visual aid • Heighten interests • Resource efficient • Effective tool for discussions DISADVANTAGES • Waste of class time • Makes some drift or get bored
The Passion of the Christ A lesson on content analysis and measurements
Contrasts • Non-naked classroom • Shows the entire film to the class • Discusses the techniques of content analysis • Asks students to demonstrate how to do the analysis differently Result: 6 hours of instruction on one lesson • Naked classroom • Ask students to view the movie on their own time • Before they come to class, give them instructions to evaluate/measure the amount of violence in the film • Before the class, make them view the clip of the documentary showing how content analysis and measurements were done about the movie • In the classroom, discuss the methods and their assignment Result: 1 hour of instruction on one lesson
Socrative Classroom This method could be used inside or outside of the classroom
Contrasts • Non-naked classroom • Prohibits the use of technology in the classroom to discourage non-instruction related use • Makes students uneasy to clarify some unclear material due to inability to acquire facts • Limited participation • Naked classroom • Allows technology use but drives the class to use it for instruction related purposes • Make students access facts and bring up questions about inconsistencies • Total participation
Analogies Application on CT Mode
Contrasts • Non-Naked Classroom • Spends half an hour to explain measurement • Spends half an hour to do some exercises • Naked Classroom • Spends 15 minutes using an example to lecture • Spends half an hour listening to student applications
Other Examples • Online quizzes before chapter discussions • Only textbook and factual information are asked • JITT – Using student mobile devices to answer and ask questions before and during instructions • When you go to the bathroom, please observe the graffiti and be ready to report your findings to class • Discussion forum • Reading application • Search for other sources • Analogies or Context Exercises • Lecturing about measurement errors to a particular audience • Explaining ethics to different audiences • Use media for case studies or demonstrations • Investigations (Chapter reporting with the use of case studies)
Caution • Dosage issues • Technological divide issues • Teacher competency issues
