This Session • Creativity is? • Do we need it (creativity)? • Do organisations need to be creative? • How do we create? • How can organisations become creative ? Ralph Rollins Sept 05
Creativity is? If you had to describe creativity: How would you do it? What would you say it is? In groups of 3-4 members spend 10-15 minutes to come up with your agreed understanding of what creativity is. Ralph Rollins Sept 05
Creativity Webster's Dictionary Suggests that: Creativity is marked by the ability or power to create, to bring into existence, to invest with a new form, to produce through imaginative skill, to make or bring into existence something new. Ralph Rollins Sept 05
Creativity • Carl Rodgers (psychologist and writer) -- The emergence of a novel, relational product, growing out of the uniqueness of the individual. • Henry Miller (writer) -- The occurrence of a composition which is both new and valuable. • John Haefele (Entrepreneur) -- The ability to make new combinations of social worth. • Newell, Simon, & Shaw (Logic theorists) -- A special class of problem solving characterised by novelty. Ralph Rollins Sept 05
Creativity • H. H. Fox (scientist) -- Any thinking process in which original patterns are formed and expressed. • E. Paul Torrance (educator, academic, creativity investigator) --Fluency , flexibility, originality, and sometimes elaboration. • Rollo May (writer, philosopher) - Creativity is the process of bringing something new into being... • Roger von Oech -Creative thinking involves imagining familiar things in a new light, digging below the surface to find previously undetected patterns, and finding connections among unrelated phenomena Ralph Rollins Sept 05
Creativity From these thoughts, other writings and your own experience you can make your own mind up about what creativity and the creative process are. I like Henry Miller's idea of something new and useful being the product of creativity. But, is something new good enough? Ralph Rollins Sept 05
Creativity & Managing Organisations What is it about the world today, and probably into the future, that is making creativity the focus of so much attention? Ralph Rollins Sept 05
Creativity & Managing Organisations Again in your groups, produce a list of reasons: why creativity is a key activity that managers should actively promote within organisations. Ralph Rollins Sept 05
Creativity & Managing Organisations • Is creativity something that naturally occurs within organisations? • Is creativity something that can be organised? • Or is creativity an individual experience? Ralph Rollins Sept 05
Creativity & Managing Organisations Now we have an understanding of what creativity is, why it is important and maybe why creativity has not always been the main focus within organisations. How might a manager successfully promote creativity? How would you do it if you were a manager? Ralph Rollins Sept 05
