SIMPLE SENTENCE • Subject + verb • I love chicken. • Mary drove to the store. • The spaceship and the roller coaster are the most popular rides at the fair.
COMPOUND SENTENCE • 2 simple sentences joined by a • (a) comma + conjunction (FANBOYS) or • (b) semicolon. Perry is my brother, and Jerry is my brother-in-law. (You) please make a smart decision, and (you) reject the proposal.You must obey the rules, or you can’t play. I took two aspiring tablets, but my headache did not go away. My little sister is an amazing soccer player, so she hopes to get a college scholarship. Jack’s pig is groomed well; it’s friendly, too. Sarah wasn’t very optimistic she’d pass the test; she felt certain she was going to fail.
COMPOUND SENTENCE • You cannot form a compound sentence using these types of conjunctions: • because, although, since, whenever • That means if you EVER have a comma before or after these words, you are WRONG WRONGWRONG! • WRONG: Barbara is on unemployment now, since she got fired. • RIGHT: Barbara is on unemployment now since she got fired. • RIGHT: Barbara is on unemployment now; she got fired. • WRONG: My head hurts, because I’m dehydrated. • RIGHT: My head hurts because I’m dehydrated. • RIGHT: My head hurts, and I’m dehydrated. • RIGHT: My head hurts; I’m dehydrated.
