  1. Warm-Up 8-25-14 • A new soda can is analogous to which system? Open or closed and why? • How much solar radiation does the earth absorb? • Bears are __________ because they can eat both ________ and _________ Agenda Turn in WS Earth’s Interior Notes Chp 2-3 continued Lab Water cycle Tide pool food web internet Homework Sept 2 –Test chp 1 & 2

  2. Chapter 2-3 ContinuedNutrient Cycle

  3. The Water Cycle • Evaporation: water is converted from its liquid form to its vapor form and transferred from land and to the atmosphere • Condensation: the change of water from its gaseous form (water vapor) into liquid water • Precipitation: water released from clouds in the form of rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, or hail.

  4. The Water Cycle • Run-off: the flow of water, from rain, snowmelt, or other sources, over land • Transpiration: evaporation of water from plants

  5. The Carbon Cycle • Photosynthesis, energy from the sun is used to convert carbon dioxide to food by plants • Respiration, animals take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide CARBON DIOXIDE

  6. The Carbon Cycle -Over millions of years it turns into fossil fuels -Fossil fuels=used for driving cars  releases carbon into the atmosphere -Open burnings also release carbon into the atmosphere

  7. The Nitrogen Cycle • Plants and animals can’t use Nitrogen gas from the air • Nitrogen-fixing bacteria convert gas to ammonia and place in soil

  8. The Nitrogen Cycle 1. Nitrogen is in the air. Bacteria in soil take it from the air and put it in the soil. (Nitrogen-fixing) 2. Autotrophs then use the nitrogen to grow. 3. Heterotrophs eat the autotroph and get nitrogen. 4. Decomposers (bacteria) breakdown urine/decomposing tissues from organisms releasing nitrogen 5. It is released for plants to use and into the atmosphere

  9. The Phosphorus Cycle • Phosphorus is rarely a gas, so it can’t cycle through the atmosphere.

  10. Lab Directions Part 1: Add 100ml to the glass beaker and put it on the hot plate. Turn the hot plate on to 150 Celsius. Cover your beaker with aluminum foil and observe. Part 2: Obtain 100 ml of flour and add 35 ml of color water to it. Mix well and create a modelof the Earth’s interior layers Clean up procedure: Make sure nothing go in the sink (all dough go in the trash can).

  11. Tide Pool Food Web Sun • Draw lines to show energy movement in a food web for these 10 species. 2. Label each animal as: -Autotroph -Carnivores -Herbivores -Omnivores Algae Plankton Barnacles Mussels Sea urchin Periwinkles Crabs Limpets Sea stars (starfish) Sea gulls

  12. Answer These Questions in Complete Sentences • List the (autotroph) producers in the tide pool • Which species cannot move and attached itself to rocks? • Which species is camouflaged in the tide pool? How can camouflage help them? • Which intertidal zone can we expect to find mussels? • How can humans hurt or help the tide pool? • Draw a picture of sea urchin(s)
