Element of the day • 96 - Curium – Cm • Curium is named after Pierre and Marie Curie who discovered polonium and radium, but not curium. • No element discovered since WWII has been discovered by just one person, but instead by teams of researchers working together. • Curium was discovered by a team lead by Glenn Seaborg using a 60-inch cyclotron at the University of California, Berkley (a trend, you’ll notice). • Curium is used in portable alpha-particle sources which use the heat generated from radioactive decay to power instruments that must operate for a long time away from people – for example in space probes.
