Review your ratings • Which 5 skills are most important and essential for effective communication? • Why did you select these items? • In which areas are you (as an individual) strongest? • In which areas do you need the most improvement? • In what types of situations will you need these communication skills?

7 key elements (page 5) Others Connect with OTHERS. Communication is relational. Consider culture.
7 key elements (page 5) Purpose Determine your PURPOSE. What are you trying to accomplish? All communication is purposeful.
7 key elements (page 5) Context Adapt to CONTEXT. “Circumstances & setting in which communication takes place” Context affects meaning. 4 types of contexts: psychosocial- psychological & cultural environment logistical- physical characteristics interactional- type of interaction (interpersonal, group, or presentational) mediated- “something” exists between communicators (such as technology)
