GALILEO GIL UPDATEfor RACL Merryll S. Penson November 13, 2008
GALILEO • Activity Report disseminated • Seeking graphic illustrators for Kids page. • WebFeat – continuing to have technical issues. • Annual Survey completed November 10 • Standard Questions • Additional questions • Interfaces • Collection • Preliminary results to be presented to GALILEO Steering Committee December 5, 2008
GALILEO FY09: the Bad News • Cancelled CSA (recoup funds for 8 months) • GIL Express • More cuts could come
GALILEO FY09: Good news • Funding provided for increased costs of databases and enrollment increases • PsycInfo – full cost paid by GALILEO • CSA – full cost was to be paid by GALILEO • All other resources are available
GALILEO FY10 • Uncertain economic environment • FY 10 USG budget for GALILEO/GIL will begin at 10% less than FY09 • Enrollment increase: 11,981 FTE (Like adding an institution larger than Valdosta whose FTE is 10,489) • FY09 235,187 FTE • FY10 247,168 FTE • Just to cover GALILEO operations fee, Lexis Nexis, and PsycInfo for the new students at FY09 prices - $95,727
Databases • College Source – based on feedback gathered by Rachel, would be cancelled for FY10. (FY09 cost for USG $108K) • RACL Exec may and E-Collection Development group (which Rachel will talk about) may need to work in parallel. That is, we may need to prune our existing databases to meet budget cuts and enrollment increases and make decisions sooner rather than later so libraries can make decisions. • May need to eliminate other databases to cover costs for GIL Express
GIL • Voyager 7 Upgrade • December 17-31 • GIL Express suspension midnight December 16 • Voyager 7 WebVoyage will be a little different. • Limited work on interface, but some • Discussions with GSU regarding future support of GIL and GALILEO applications and support • Ex Libris President will visit in December. • Cataloging Committee will be meeting via Wimba for discussion of various issues
VuFind Pilot • Extend Pilot project into Spring Semester given the issues with the current software. • Load newest/best VuFind release for pilot sites. • Conduct the pilot testing. • Conduct usability tests (GIL OPAC Committee). • Make final determination. • Run parallel interfaces of VuFind and Web Voyage. • Refine the WebVoyage 7 interface if VuFind is found to not be a practical option
GIL • GIL Express • Update sent to RACL October 31, 2008 • At this time no funds have been identified to continue beyond Fall Semester. • For Spring Semester, would USG Libraries be open to • Paying full costs for GIL Express? • If the USG could find some funds – could you find the remainder?
Costs • Lower end – annual costs • $317,000 ($27.00 per stop) 5 days per week • Higher end – annual costs • $ 635,904 ($54.00 per stop) - 5 days per week • Six months estimated costs for System • $138,000 --- $317,000
If libraries pay • Models • Complex • Tiered models • Net borrower models • Less complex models • Easier to explain • Potential for adding non USG institutions in the future • Example: Flat per stop – every institution pays the same • $4542 to $9084 (6 mos) • Example: FTE model • $.68 to $ 1.35 per FTE ( 6 mos) • Survey RACL to determine willingness/ability to pay full freight or contribute if USG can find some resources.
Follow-up • GIL Express Survey • GIL User Group Meeting Survey
