POST-SECONDARY TALK WITH SENIORS • Navigating the senior year • College Application Workshops: • Monday, October 7th, 2:15-3:15pm • 2 Year Application- LHS Forum • 4 Year Application- LHS Library • Monday, October 28th 2:15-3:15pm • All students- LHS Library • Counselors are here for all students regardless of post-secondary plans • Communicate often with your counselor in person and through email
PREPARING FOR LIFE AFTER GRADUATION Individual Senior Meeting with Counselor • Ensure progress toward graduation. • Review options for next year. • Consider all the criteria in what makes a college a good fit for you. • Standardized testing…retake SAT? Take the ACT? Accuplacer? ASVAB? • NCAA/NAIA Eligibility Center. • Senior year post-secondary timeline.

COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS (CONTINUED) • Student Verifies Completion with University • Allow 1 week for counselor role, 1 to 2 weeks for processing by the college before application is considered complete. • Admissions decision timeline will depend on when you applied, when they received it, and how many applications they have received (larger schools will often take longer than smaller ones). • Be Patient…
STUDENT ROLE • Research options • Complete/Submit Applications (by October 31) • Essays – some required, some optional • Submit Application Fee • Check, credit card, fee waiver (see counselor) • Notify Counselor • Parchment, Common App, Send.Edu
STUDENT ROLE(CONTINUED) • Request necessary recommendations • Teachers, counselor, employer, etc. • Request 2 weeks prior to due date • Submit OFFICIAL test scores when necessary • Follow up to verify completed applications with prospective schools • Scholarship Research/Searches • Be aware of specific application requirements – they are all different.
PARENT ROLE • Help students complete applications • Encourage independence throughout the process • College Visits • Encourage open-minded attitude • Proofread essays/applications
COUNSELOR ROLE • Help students find and complete applications • Coordinate College Visits- Sign up in SSC • Complete school report/counselor recommendation • Send transcripts/recommendations/test scores in a timely fashion • Facilitate contact between admission staff/military recruiters/employers and students • Direct students to web and other resources

Transfer Information • In any given year, approximately 50%-65% of our students are planning to go to a 2 year institution. • Of those, ½ to ⅔ are looking to transfer to a 4 year institution • Apply to 2 year institution now. • Apply to 4 year institution when ready to transfer • Transfer Application (Generally 24-30 credits required when applying) • First year student application • Transfer Credit • Transfer Guide (Specific to major, example GVSU) • Transfer Equivalency (Specific to course, example WMU) • Michigan Transfer Agreement (General University Requirements)
SENIOR YEAR TIMELINE • August 1- November 1: College Applications • October 1 - March 1: FAFSA • December - Late April: Scholarships • March 1– BCCF Due: Legacy • March-April: Award Letters • May 1: College Decision Day
FALL SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINES • WMU: Medallion (Nov 15)- Automatic Invite • 3.7 GPA, 26 ACT, 1230 SAT • $15,000/year for 4 years. Total Award=$60,000 • CMU: Centralis (Oct 26, Nov 9)- Must register for competition** • 3.7 GPA, 27 ACT, 1260 SAT • 100% Tuition, Room & Board, Fees for 4 years plus Admission to Honors College and $5,000 Study Abroad Scholarship. Total Award= $100,000 • EMU: Presidential Scholarship (Nov 1)- Automatic Invite • 3.5GPA, 25 ACT, 1200 SAT • 100% Tuition, Room & Board, Fees for 4 years. Total Award=$90,000 • NMU: Harden Scholarship(Nov 3/Nov 10)- Must register for competition • 3.5 GPA, 24 ACT, 1160 SAT • 100% Tuition, Room & Board, Fees for 4 years plus admission to Honor College.
Fall Scholarship Deadlines • Michigan Tech: Leading Scholars Award (Oct 15)- Must apply for award • 3.3 GPA, 23 ACT, 1070 SAT • 100% Tuition, Room & Board plus $1000/yr for additional expenses. • LSSU: Laker Gold Scholarship (Dec 1) • 3.8 GPA, 30 ACT, 1360 SAT • 100% Tuition plus $1000 toward Room & Board • GVSU: Presidential Scholarship (Dec 31) • 3.8 GPA, 32 ACT, 1430 SAT • $9,000-$12,000/year for 4 years. • FSU: Founders Scholarship (Mid Dec- End of Feb)- Must complete MyScholarships • 3.9 GPA, 31 ACT, 1350 SAT • 100% Tuition- $12,930/yr. Total Award= $51,720
Fall Scholarship Deadlines • Oakland U: Platinum Presidential Scholar (March 1)- Automatic Invite • 3.9 GPA, 33 ACT, 1450 SAT • $12,000/yr for additional expenses. Total Award: $48,000 • U of M: Go Blue Guarantee • Accepted to U of M and Complete Financial AId Requirements by March 31 • Family income under $65,000 with assets less than $50,000 • Free Tuition and Mandatory Fees • MSU: Spartan Advantage • Accepted to MSU and Complete Financial Aid Requirements • Pell Eligible and Family Income Below Federally Established Poverty Level • 100% Tuition, Room & Board and estimated cost of books and fees.
LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP RECAP • Legacy Scholarships provides 62 credits worth of tuition, mandatory fees and a book stipend of 500 dollars per semester for 4 semesters. • Any LHS, CCHS, and BCCHS graduate qualifies for the scholarship regardless of GPA. • Must graduate with a diploma. • Sliding scale based on entry date: • 8th grade: 100% 62 credits • 9th grade: 75% 48.5 credits • 10th grade: 50% 31 credits • 11th or 12th grade Not eligible. • Must complete FAFSA, Battle Creek Community Foundation (BCCF) Scholarship Application and Terms and Conditions paperwork to receive money • Students will receive classroom instruction on the BCCF scholarship application. • Due March 1
