  3. Progression: The other 50%? If at first you don’t succeed . . . . . you don’t succeed! Source: DfES Corporate Strategy 2004; Main study aim of 16 year olds by year 11 attainment

  4. GCSE - 2008? • A* to C rose from 63.3% to 65.7%, a rise of 2.4% achieving 5 or more GCSE equivalent. • A* to C inc maths & English rose from 46% to 47.2% but less than half achieved target. (Government looking for 53% by 2011.) • Girls still ahead 52.3% compared to boys 43.2%. • Improved results in both English (up 0.7 % to 62.9%), and mathematics (up 1.1% to 56.3% ) Core subjects account for 47.4% of all entries.

Where are we now: OFSTED • Almost two thirds of state schools were judged good or outstanding (an improvement on 2006/7), but 9% were inadequate. • No change on last year. • The achievement gap between pupils on free school meals and those who were not had stayed the same for 3 years. ‘The provision that really makes a difference is ambitious. It does not believe that anyone’s past or present circumstances should define their future.’

English: OFSTED Findings • English is one of the best taught subjects. • Standards continue to rise but still below target. • Tackling underachievement: Gender gap • Limited emphasis on S&L • Use of ICT English Review 2000-2005, OFSTED • Pupils did not understand enough about what they needed to do to improve and how they would achieve their targets. • Effective assessment for learning contributed to pupils outstanding achievement and transformed their learning.   29. What are Functional Skills? Required component of Diploma 3 year pilot, available from Entry 1 to Level 2 Embedded teaching and learning at Key Stage 3 Compulsory at KeyStage 4 from 2010

Functional SkillsAchievement & Attainment Tables Level 1 Each qualification is worth 12.5 points Equivalent to short course GCSE Level 2 Each qualification is worth 23 points Equivalent to short course GCSE Entry 1 = 5 points Entry 2 = 6 points Entry 3 = 7 points Entry Level What does this mean? • Increases school attainment • Level 2 worth ½ GCSE grade B • Each Functional Skill is equivalent to half a GCSE at Level 1/ Level 2 • Achievement at all three FS worth 1.5 GCSEs

  36. WorkSkills: Key Features A suite of over 30 stand alone bite size units of 10 GLH. The units are currently available at Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2 • Build your own BTEC: • Learners can choose as many or as few units as they wish to build qualifications of different sizes at different levels. • Making WorkSkills fit into learners needs and existing timetables and existing programmes: E.G. PSHE, Work Experience, Enterprise, Careers, GCSEs, GCEs, Diplomas, BTECs, NVQs, Functional Skills etc • Within and across all Key Stages and post 19. • Combined they can create: • BTEC Award, 3 credits = .25 GCSE equivalent • BTEC Certificate , 13 credits = 1 GCSE equiv. • BTEC Diploma, 37 credits = 4 GCSEs equiv.
