Animal Adaptations • What are animal adaptations? • Animal adaptations are any body shape, process, or behavior that allows an organism to survive in its environment. • Animals change over time to fit the needs of their environment.
Physical Adaptations • Physical features that help animals obtain food, keep safe, build homes, withstand weather, and attract mates. Physical adaptations do not develop during an animal's life but over many generations. In your group, give an example of an animal and its physical adaptation.
Behavioral Adaptations • Other adaptations are behavioral. Behavioral adaptations are the things organisms do to survive. For example, bird calls and migration are behavioral adaptations. • In your group, give an example of an animal and its behavioral adaptation.
Natural Selection • Natural Selection is the process by which organisms best suited to the environment survive and reproduce, passing their genes to the next generation.
Camouflage • In your group, define camouflage • Camouflage is blending in with the background
Warning Coloration • Animals with a chemical defense need a way to warn predators that they should look elsewhere for food. • Warning Coloration- predators will often avoid any animal with the colors and patterns they associate with pain, illness or other unpleasant experiences.
