Purpose of Bed-side Teaching • Best and most effective way of learning medicine and patient care • Apprenticeship is encouraged • Patient oriented learning: history taking, physical examination • To update the teachers own knowledge, clinical skills and teaching skills • To teach the students regarding behavior, attitude and psychosocial aspect of illness • To improve interpersonal communication skills and • To impart knowledge regarding the concept of holistic care
Skills Required for Bed-side Teaching • Adequate qualification and expertise in the field and good communication skills • Basic requirements of clinical teachers include • Empathy • Patience • Politeness • Perseverance • Non-judgmental
Skills Required for Bed-side Teaching • Properly attired and dignified • Good public relation skills and respect for members of the health care team • Ethical behavior towards patients and their attendants
How to Prepare for Bed-side Teaching • Set clear objectives • Proper selection of patients according to the level of students • Common diseases should be given due prominence • Patients selected should not be very ill, have good physical findings, cooperative • Delegation of responsibility to the group leader to help organize teaching • Be careful not to disrupt the patients management
How to Prepare for Bed-side Teaching • Take permission from patient/parents prior to examination • Due care to avoid patients in pain • Proper ambience and making the patient comfortable
Assessment of Bed-side Teaching • Student feedback at the end of posting • Standardized form • Peer assessment • Feedback from other members of the health care team
