1. Enhanced Mobile Document ImagingProduct Overview
May 2009
3. eMDI Delivers Real Value
Improves cash flow for LTL carriers by reducing the time between delivery of shipments and invoicing the shipper
eMDI enables processing after each stop versus the end of the day or after leaving with a drop off service
Trip envelopes have to be processed before customers can be billed.
Point & Capture user experience reduces variability in image quality between individual users
Laser framer (no more “estimating” with a view finder)
Image enhancement that can’t be provided by using camera only
Keystone correction (perspective), brightness, flattening, contrast
Works in indoor, outdoor and cab lighting conditions
Easy integration with existing mobile applications and popular document management systems
Compatible with major document management systems.
Supports common document indexing schemes (doc #, PRO #, invoice #, date/time stamp, etc.)
Creates images in native formats that are accepted by document management companies.
Use eMDI software “out of the box”.
Integrates directly with existing mobile applications.
APIs available to customize user experience. Mobile imagers give workers a fast and reliable way to convert paper documents into electronic forms. Electronic document capture streamlines back office operations and reduces data entry time, because document images can be transmitted from the field directly to back office applications over wireless networks. Customer service and other staff gain real-time access to document images, via the enterprise systems, which can be used to answer customer queries, issue invoices, and update records.

Image capture from ~1 foot above document
Works in outdoor, indoor and cab lighting conditions
Laser framer (no fiddling with viewfinder)
Image correction
Keystone correction, brightening, flattening, contrast
Up to 10 degrees of rotation, up to 35 degrees off of vertical
Images in file sizes reasonable for mobile environments
6. Easy to Integrate Compatible with common document management systems
TMW
Create native TIFF images
No image format conversion required to import images into a document mgmt system
TIFF is most common format supported by document mgmt systems
Motorola currently produces JPEG
TIFF files are smaller than JPEG (4x more compression)
Support for common document indexing schemes
doc #, PRO #, invoice #, date/time stamp, GPS geo code, meta data into image
User Options
Use EMDI software out-of-the-box
Integrate directly with your existing mobile application
Shorten development
Proven user experience
APIs available to customize the user experience
7. How To Use eMDI Place document on a flat surface with a dark background in an environment with good lighting
Depress the scan button and hold it down to project the laser framer onto the document
Starting from a few inches away slowly raise the mobile computer straight up.
The laser framer will spread beyond the edges of the document. The image will be captured and the computer should beep to indicate a good read.
8. Current Performance – Set The Right Expectation Intermec is the first to market with full size document imaging. In the coming years, eMDI will receive continued product development investment. However, the initial offering will support only human readable applications.
Constraints
Full size documents
8.5” x 11” and A4
Documents need good print contrast and good lighting environments
Image capture is limited to only jpeg grayscale images
Half size documents can be captured to TIFF monochrome images if they have good print contrast with good lighting
Current version does not support OCR or decoding embedded barcodes

Transportation processes still very paper intensive (ex. Bills of Lading)
Less-than-Truckload carriers
Courier Express Package
Postal Carrier Last Mile Delivery
Field Service --secondary
Paperless service delivery confirmation from the field
