A little about Malawi • Malawi is located in southeast Africa. • It is bordered by Zamia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique on the east, south and west. • The country is separated from Tanzania and Mozambique by Lake Malawi. • Malawi has an estimated population of 16,777,547. • Its capital is Lilongwe, which is also Malawi's largest city; the second largest is Blantyre and the third is Mzuzu.
An introduction to the project • Local partner organisation Friends of Mulanje Orphans (FOMO) • FOMO was established in 2000 to aid Orphans in Mulanje, a district of Malawi, Africa • This organisation is also UK based • From small beginnings FOMO has grown and now looks after over 5000 children through a network of 13 centres covering over 85 villages in Mulanje district of Malawi.
Mulanje • Mulanje is a town in the Southern Region, close to the border of Mozambique. • Mulanjeis the headquarters of the MulanjeMountain Conservation Trust • The small town of Mulanje is the centerof Malawi's tea growing industry.
What will you be doing? • When the team has been finalised we will decide a project based on the strengths and skills of the team and work towards a fundraising target that will be beneficial to the project. • FOMO have suggested that once a team is selected we decide s departure date. • It is recommended that the minimum project length will be around 3 - 4 weeks as more can be achieved during this time • There are a wide range of projects available with FOMO • These include • Teaching; art, musicand other subjects • Painting • Construction • Building • Many others
Where will you be staying ? • You will be staying at one of FOMOS centres • These are basic accommodations which consist of bedrooms, bathroom and a lounge which accommodate up to 12 people • There is no kitchen attached directly to the accommodation however it is recommended that a cook is employed throughout the stay which allows the volunteers to learn how to cook local foods and provides some local employment • This will be the first time DARE has worked alongside FOMO on this project so it is vital that we make a good impression and assist them with the great work they have done so far.

What are the aims of this project? • The aims of this project will follow that of FOMO as they are the local partner organisation • AIM: • The mission of FOMO is to provide and enhance the health, education, shelter, and meet the basic human needs of all orphaned and vulnerable children of Mulanje • Objecives: • To raise the standards of, and provide continuity of care and education to all Mulanje’s orphaned children • To integrate the orphaned children in the local community by fostering or adoption. • To raise awareness about issues related to FOMO’s activities. • To enable FOMO Mulanje, to be self-funding through business ventures.
What are the benefits to the locals? • Maintained and ran 13 FOMO Centres • Maintained the children feeding programme, 1.2 million meals a year • Maintained Health Care to the children most in need • These are just some of the achievements of FOMO which have benefitted the health care, education and food security of the locals. For more information on the work of FOMO visit their website http://www.fomo.co.uk/
What are the benefits for the volunteers? • This project will allow volunteers to make a real impact in a developing country due to the presence of a local partner organisation which provides structured and achievable projects • Not only will you help others but you will also be immersed in another culture , meet new people and have a life changing experience which give you a new and broadened perspective (and probably make you want to do it again!) • You even have the opportunity to travel and see more of Malawi when the project finishes so you can see the diversity of the country and all the country has to offer
Why Malawi? • Malawi is a pilot project so you have the opportunity to establish DARE in this country and gain an insight into the culture of Malawi • You will work with many inspirational children and have the chance to make a real difference in their lives • FOMO have clearly made a significant impact on the lives of people in Mulanje and now you can help them achieve much more.
