  1. Teaching RDM with the New England Collaborative Data Management CurriculumDLF e-Research WebinarJuly 15, 2015 Presented by Elaine Martin and Donna Kafel Lamar Soutter Library University of Massachusetts Medical School

  2. Background of NECDMC • How we got started • IMLS planning grant • Funding NN/LM NER • Content partners • Piloting NECMDC

  3. IMLS Planning Grant: Frameworks for a Data Management Curriculum http://library.umassmed.edu/data_management_frameworks.pdf

  4. Student Interviews “I never thought about needing this data after this group project is over.”—Undergraduate engineering student “We send project data as attachments in e-mails. Usually one student in our group saves the data on his laptop.” –Undergraduate engineering student “I kept my laptop with me at all times when I was conducting public health research. When the project was over, I destroyed all the data to eliminate the risk of exposing my project participants’ personal information.”--Graduate Nursing Student “I spend a lot of time trying to track down data that other members of the team have stored randomly . I also find it hard to figure out what data is in a file when it’s given an unrelated name.”---Graduate Biomedical Sciences student

  5. Faculty Interviews • RDM Practices are varied • No formal RDM training provided for students • Lab managers and students come and go • Students need a familiar context to learn RDM so that they can apply lessons in their own practice

  6. NSF Simplified Data Management Plan

  7. Teaching Cases Ortho Case (2011) Vitamin D Bipolar Depression Case (2013)

  8. NECDMC Teaching Modules

  9. Customizing slides for your audience Information about library services Local contacts

  10. Local Piloting • NN/LM, MAR Class (Philadelphia, April 2013) • 90 minute class for UMMS Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) bootcamp • 15-week Simmons GSLIS • “Train the Trainer Class” Nov. 2013, May 2014, June 2015

  11. Piloting Beyond UMMS • NECDMC site launched Nov. 2013 • 14 partner sites throughout the U.S. and Canada • Provided evaluation of modules • Provide feedback • New ways of using NECDMC

  12. NECDMC Pilot Sites

  13. Teaching with NECDMC: different approaches Credit course for grad students 7 weekly workshops for staff, faculty & students One hour overview class Professional development workshop for librarians Session at Scientific Conference Full day class for graduate students Semester LIS course Graduate student induction course

  14. How are the research cases being used? • Flipped classroom • Integrated into lectures • Group work and breakout sessions • Homework • Activities in module • lesson plans • One case over series of • classes

  15. FeedbackWhat our partners are saying • Like being able to customize slides for their local settings • Easier to teach groups from a single discipline • Don’t teach all modules in one day! • Students like practical activities, e.g. File naming, creating dmps from cases • Assign case reading prior to class

  16. Join the Collaboration! • Provide feedback with project team via e-mail • Share your slides/course materials on Community Bulletin Board • Post your experience using NECDMC to the greater community on “Join the Community” page • Consider writing a new research case

  17. Next Steps • Interactive modules • Expanding cases to include other disciplines • Adding new partners
