  2. The Person in the Poem • The tone of a poem, we said, is like tone of voice in that both communicate feelings. Still, this comparison raises a question: when we read a poem, whose “voice” speaks to us? • The poet’s voice is a possible answer. PERSONA is important. The speaker may be a persona, or fictitious character: not the poet, but the poet’s creation.
