The ESL Corner Susan Chen and Virginia Blais are delighted to share with parents some of the fantastic activities their children have been and will be engaged in while acquiring English as a second language in the first grade. At the beginning of the school year, ESL learners can feel very overwhelmed by the classroom situation. There are new words to learn in every class, from math and science to reading and writing workshops. Teachers work very hard to prepare students for challenging vocabulary they will encounter before and after learning experiences, but the ESL learners sometimes need some extra practice to make these words their own. How can you help? As we progress through the year, we will post vocabulary words that are essential for all students to be familiar with at grade level. These words will come from across the curriculum and we will briefly describe in what context your child is learning them. Along with each list of words, we will post games and activities that you can do with your child at home to help them internalize these new words. Be creative and explore the language together with your child at home!

  3. BINGOThis is a fantastic game that you can make with any of your vocabulary words at home. Using visuals with these vocabulary words will help ESL learners. Attached is a bingo paper with science vocabulary for you to try at home. Number-Line Squeeze This is a fun math activity that your child can teach you. All you need is a 0-20 number line and 2 small objects like raisins or blocks. Place one object on 0 and one on 20. Choose a secret number. Let your child ask, ‘Is it ____?’ Slide the object to that number and reply ‘It is (bigger/smaller) than ____. Try again! Practice taking turns! Hangman This is a great game to practice the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. This game works best with words ESL learners can be successful at sounding out and spelling independently, like sight words. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangman
