  1. Night Face Up Book by: Julio Cortazar Presentation by: Jessica B. and Emily H.

  2. Introductory Statement • Truth means the true or actual state of a matter. It also means the state or character of being true, and also the actuality or actual existence. But in this story, truth means the struggle between fact or reality. Night Face Up by Julio Cortazar is a story about a man caught between two realities, not fully deciphering which is real and which is just a dream. eh

  3. Story from Class Universal Topic Connection • The universal topic of truth is present in Night Face Up by him going back and forth between Aztec times and modern times, confusing the reader of what is reality and what is not. jb

  4. Text-to-Text Connection • Truth is represented in Lucid by Adrienne Stoltz by the main character, Sloane, dreaming about another life every night. She becomes so lost in both realities, she does not know which life is real and which is not. This story is similar to Night Face Up by both of the main characters not being able to grasp reality. eh

  5. Text-to-Text Connection • Truth could also be interpreted in the movie Inception because he would insert himself into other people’s dreams to extract and implant information, not exactly making it distinct on what is reality. jb

  6. Text-to-Text Connection • For our final text-to-text connection, truth is in the song Unwell by Matchbox 20 by the singer saying he used to be himself, but now he has lost grasp on what is real. It is based off Schizophrenia, and in the song he says he hallucinates and is crazy. eh

  7. Text-to-Self Connection • Truth is quite current in my life, especially through dreams I play out through the night. It wasn’t too long ago that I had found out that a time I believed occurred was only a dream. The dream had been me when I was younger and I was outside and seen a squirrel up against a tree. Curious, as kids are, I approached the squirrel making gestures to draw it closer to me. After awhile I realized it wasn’t going to approach me so I stepped toward the squirrel to only have it attack me. It wasn’t ‘till a month ago my mother confessed that it wasn’t reality. jb

  8. Text-to-Self Connection • A time when truth was prominent in my life, was when I had a dream I finally met my friend from Texas. In the dream, everything was very realistic and detailed, only having a slight fuzzy look, as if I had forgotten my glasses. The dream was very emotional and I woke up thinking it had actually happened, only to realize it was only a dream. Like many of the texts explained in the other slides, there was a moment when I was confused between what was real and not. eh

  9. Text-to-Self Connection • Though it seems crazy, lies always fall back upon the truth. Not to long ago I was approached about a rumor having to do with one of my friend’s. What made it worse, my other friend had been the one to spread the rumor. I was constantly debating on who was telling the truth as one friend pleads its not true and the other says it is. It wasn't until I finally chose a side to agree on that my eyes had been opened on what the truth was. So for awhile my decision and belief had me living in a lie when I believed it was the truth from the start. jb

  10. Text-to-Self Connection • Many times there have been where I did not believe the truth and went by thinking wrongly. One of those times is when my best friend said something mean about me to someone else, and when that person told me what she said, I laughed and told myself she would never say that. She was my best friend, of course I was going to think that she would never say anything bad about me. But more people told me that she had actually said it, and I was hurt. It was a big disappointment and supports the quote: "The truth hurts." It sure does, especially when this happened. eh

  11. Conclusion • Truth is a major factor in everyone’s lives so we all have our own stories relating to the topic. The way all of our stated texts related to Night Face Up, we have the ability to do the exact same. Truth is often hidden behind an allusion. As Marcus Aurelius states, “Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.” jb
