Neural tube defects (NTD’s). anencephaly. Neural tube doesn’t form right, and the baby’s brain or spine is damaged. Happens within the first few weeks of pregnancy often before a woman knows that she is pregnant. Can cause lifelong disability or death.

  2. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Complications may include: • Abnormal heart structure • Behavior problems • Infant death • Mental retardation • Problems in the structure of the head, eyes, nose, or mouth • Poor growth before birth • Slow growth and poor coordination after birth
